Re: Do Cactus Seeds Need Light to Germinate?

Thanks Peter

I know that grass seed is triggered by light so I didn't know if that applied here. I am leaving mine in available 'dim' light for now and see what happens.

Do Cactus Seeds Need Light to Germinate?

Hi all I was wondering if cactus seeds need light to germinate. I have my seeds on top of the furnace to give them bottom heat and that works great. But there is very little light there even during the brightest days. I was planning on adding light or moving them to light when they sprout or shortly...

Re: Daiv's 2012 Outdoor Contribution

Daiv After spending some time here on the board and seeing and reading what works for a lot of people I feel much more educated. I tried just growing in our soil here. And here, specifically at my home, the soil here is clay. And lots of it. So if nothing else the O. I tried probably were way too we...

Re: Pros and Cons of Grafting

Bummer... Those don't look like all flower buds. I circled those that look like offsets in red and buds in pink. All those are gone? Oh no not all fell off. A couple. Here is a picture I just took to compare. I did downsize the pot, but that is all I did. Gymnocalycium mihanovichii subsp. friedrich...

Re: Daiv's 2012 Outdoor Contribution

hey Peterthecactusguy I did find a web site that shows tests on some hardy cactus. http://www.holidayjunction.com/cacti/seedtrials.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; But the results didn't seem that promising to me. Ottawa is zone 5 and I am in zone 6a so perhaps they woul...

Re: Pros and Cons of Grafting

Hi paulzie
I've been watching it. It's like watching water boil. It hasn't done anything. I think I must have accidentally knocked off the larger flower bud, it's gone. Beyond that it looks basically the same. I suspect it's gone into hibernation. It's going to be a long winter.

Re: Daiv's 2012 Outdoor Contribution

Hi Daiv You and I are approximately the same latitude. And I read you get some pretty cold winters as I do. You seem to have some nice outdoor cactus. I take it you leave them in the ground all winter and they survive. I have no idea what I can grow and leave outside here. I am at about Latitude:42....

Re: Succulent ID

Thanks All

I am leaning towards the Sedum telephium or Sedum spectabile. A lot of the pictures I have seen shows them very similar, possibly mislabelled. From what I have seen with kalanchoë they DO have tiny plants between the leaf points and mine do not appear to have any.

Re: My Haworthia has pups!

Hi Steve I don't think it needs that much time. Chlorine can dissipate after about a day or so. About the same time you need to wait to put fish into a freshly filled aquarium. There may be salts or other things in your water as well that may cause it. Does it look like there is no signs of it on th...

Re: Succulent ID

Thank-you very much. I have the leaf sticking in some soil right now with a baggie over it and I'll see what happens. I know this is not the right time for growth but I have nothing to lose.

Succulent ID

Hi All
This is all I have. One lonely leaf. I would like to try and grow it. Does anyone know what it might be? Or where I can start to search for it? Can I even grow a plant from one leaf?
Thanks, Ivan

Re: Never seen one this bad....

It still must be pretty healthy none the less. Plenty of good looking pups. It does look rough on the one side. And in a 6" pop it is a good size. Mine is only 1 1/2" in diameter and I'd love to get a flower on it in the spring. I have hope.

Thanks
