Mini Stapelia...?!
Hello everybody, yesterday in a plantshop I found something, that looked to me like a Stapelia -- but it is TINY. Nonetheless, it has flowered (done) & carries some buds. Incredible. 8) About size: The plant is about 5cm (ca. 2in) high. The pot measures about 5cm (ca. 2in) across. The measure sh...

Re: Epis with reddish newgrowth
Hallo Greenknight,
The new stalks really are very soft & tender, their skin of older stalks is by far tougher.
Would you kindly please explain: How could the red colour or missing chlorophyllum protect the new growth from what?
Thanks
N.

Re: Epis with reddish newgrowth
Hey Dave, I am growing cacti for over 45years now, I started as an eight year old kid. I know that plants turn red in too much direct sun. But I am talking about some other behaviour: Please look at the pictures, the overall plants DO NOT turn reddish at all, they are basking in the sun....

Re: Haworthia cooperi...?
Thanks, bbarv. Maybe it helps if I add pictures of what I have in my house -- will be doing that later. I do not expect H.cymbiformis as I have one which sat & thrieved in a spot where these two here felt it much too hot / sunny. They got into heat dorm & didn't wake up for at least two year...

Re: Epis with reddish newgrowth
Yes my Schlumbergera gaertneri also does it with new segments. Its all down to light intensity and as the segment ages it turns green. Maybe the equivalent of humans tanning to protect against too much UV light for young shoots. What does your plant do? Are the whole of the new segments reddish, or...

Epis with reddish newgrowth
Since loads of years I have a couple of Epis of different stock. Yes, I expect them to be hybrids of some sort or another. What I think interesting is their newgrowth: * In some plants it starts green with a red rim at the "leaves", which later is lost. * In some plants, the leaves start d...

Haworthia cooperi...?
Hi folks, in the course of my reorganisation & rechecking, I came to these plants. I got them loads of years ago (legally!) from the Sukkulentensammlung Zürich / Succulent Collection, Zurich. The plants had too much heat for a while, so I replaced them this hot summer. Now they have started to r...

Re: A Blooming Thread
Hallo Gillinger,
that's a real nice Matucana madisonorum. Interesting with those long spines, never seen that before.
Is this a special variety?

Re: Graptopetalum... who?
Sorry, I can't help you with that hybrid. If I were you, I would separate the younger branches, and the healthier looking full size rosettes from the cluster. You could then try the more expendable culls outdoors, and keep the best indoors through the winter. This might help you to ID it as well, s...

Re: Is this expected?
What Dave said may be true of some lumped genera in the past, but in this case there is valid evidence that lumping Parodia is not a bad idea. There have been several molecular studies that hint at Parodia being monophyletic if lumped with the other genera (Notocactus, Eriocactus, Brasilicactus, et...

Re: Graptopetalum... who?
Hallo Tom, floral pics are exactly what I am missing. Just a fortnight ago I have planted some cutlings into an extra pot so that I can leave one of the two outside during winter. At least the Mirinae should be able to cope with that when kept close to the house. I expect the winters in my house in ...
