Re: Full sun vs Shade cloth

I have not done pictures of before and after , but I do notice when I put a nursery grown/greenhouse cactus into my garden by the end of the first season it will shrink up to or more than 50% or the transplanted size. I have seen this with Echinocereus, Mammillaria, Echinopsis, even Echinocactus. I ...

Re: Cactus contest 86: Cactus collections

The outside garden blooming are mostly Echinopsis oxygona and Paramount green gold and in the background a E. Epic. The original plant I received some 20 years ago and lives through the cold wet winters, when it rains, and the 100+ degrees in summer. I planted them, they survived and as a bonus, flo...

Not often, but some days you're home to see the one day show and not have to work, or take a sick day.

Re: First greenhouse advice

To answer your questions more info would help. Size would help, budget, material you can use in your area. I have built and bought greenhouses and I find what I was looking for the in the greenhouse lead me to each one. I was able to buy redwood so I built, needed to add on, so I bought a Harbor Fre...

Re: Cactus ID and help

Don't water? Your plant may not need any water until April. Depends upon you location and how you are growing your plant i.e., greenhouse. From what I see, your plant looks fine, not sure about the white specks.

Re: Hello from the Central Valley of Northern California

You're 2 plus hours north of me and I have had an outdoor garden 20 plus years. Tracy may not get as cold as here, but you should get more rain. I cover the growth points on some plants that can't take the cold as much and most have no issues. I have a Ferocactus that had standing water in the growt...

Re: Just Interesting ... thought you MIGHT like to see ...

Did you grow them from seed or did you just buy that many of them when you went to the cactus store? :D Not sure on any of them, I grow, buy, sale, trade, receive as presents and rescue plants. I have more not picture and the Mammillaria parkinsonii was purchased at a store that doesn't sell cactus ...

Re: Crested T. Panchanoi Question

Been in the ground for over 20 years, no flowers yet. I do take off all normal columnar growth. I get about 8 to 10 each year. The plant is easily 4 feet in diameter and 4 plus feet tall. :)

Re: Rooting cuttings of Oreocereus

I had an 8 foot long branch leaning towards the sun and decided to cut it out so the whole plant won't fall over. I cut the stem into 3 pieces and rooted them in 5 gallon containers. One year later they were rooted well enough to be planted out in the yard. Each were trimmed about 24 inches each.

Re: How can I tell if a cactus outgrew its pot?

Plastic pots: squeeze the pot. If it is hard and not forgiving, root bound. Clay pots: I have had the pot split/crack from being root bound.
