So the layering thing isn't true? :? Well, it's probably just as well, since I only put a few small stones at the bottom, since there weren't many handy. Don't worry about the plants burning - I only moved them out into the sun for a short while, and it wasn't much brigter than the sun they receive ...

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I realise I probably sound like a big idiot, growing my cacti in non-draining pots, so I understand your viewpoints. But I do intend to take the very best care I can of these plants (in fact, I'm going to take them outside just now so that they can get some sun and d...

I understand about them needing drainage holes and all that, but I've been growing a portulacaria (hardier than cacti, I admit) in a non-draining container for awhile with no ill effects. There are people who succuessfully grow cacti in containers without drainage. I keep my pots inside, away from t...

Cactus pots

Today, at an SPCA sale, I bought four great and inexpensive pots (altogether they cost 15 rand, which is a little over 2 dollars) and potted up some of my indoor cacti. Because I am always forgetting to water my plants, and I can't stand it when the water seeps out the drainage holes onto my chest o...

Can I help?

I'd love to help by sending you photos of my plants, but I'm not sure if I have any that you don't have photos of. Most of mine are fairly common, but I have a few more unusual succulents. Is there an up-to-date list anywhere of plants you need?

I suspected it was sarmentosa (I have the variegated one which looks quite similar), but I wasn't sure. The flowers look the same, but the leaves look a bit smaller. The ones in the pictures also have more space between the leaves. Maybe mine's just a slightly different variety? P.S. due to a downpo...

Hi, I'm also new around here. :) Not sure what the first cactus is, but the second is definitely of the Optunia (prickly pear) family. Perhaps the prickly pear itself? When it comes to indoor pots, plastic is probably best. One way you could try holding the cacti up is with a nice rock. If you could...

I did a Google search of C. lactea, and it was very similar, but seemed to lacked the ridged edges of my plant. Also, as you said, none of them seemed to have developed the red colouration mine has (it's now a whole lot redder than in the photo).

Well, I'm in the minority, as I'm a female under twenty. My first succulent was jade bush (which started my love of succulents) and my first cacti were Christmas presents I got two years ago. Alas, two are now dead but the others are still going strong.

Succulent clubs?

Does anyone know of any succulent clubs in South Africa? You get lots overseas, but I don't know of any here, in the country with the most native succulents. Any help would be appreciated. :)

Does anyone know what kind of crassula this is? It has white star-shaped flowers in winter. I've got it growing all over the place, but haven't been able to identify it.

Hello!

Hi, I'm a succulent lover from South Africa. I've been growing succulents for a number of years now, and have amassed a collection of about 118 or so. :) I look forward to posting about my favorite plants here!
