Re: Lighting questions

A CFL with that fixture would work nicely in my opinion. CFLs are best for illuminating smaller spaces. Tubes are better for larger areas. An alternative to hanging a tube fitting from the ceiling would be to make a shelf above the plants and affix the light fixture to that, but that's probably a bi...

Re: Now what?

The upper most one looks like it might be too small to have enough time to root, but the other larger cutting should root well. Sit it on top of soil mix in a warm, dry, bright place and wait. You can lift it up occasionally to check for roots. I'd suggest only watering when you see roots beginning ...

Re: Help to ID 2 cacti _Thanks

They're both Gymnocalyciums. The first one looks familiar, but I can't think of the name. The second looks like Gymno. saglionis.

Re: fungus/how to get rid of

It just happens and once it's there it's difficult to get rid of, but it usually doesn't cause any problems. :P Sterilising your soil mix more thoroughly can help to avoid the problem.

Copiapoas re-root pretty easily, fortunately. :) Good to see your plant has rebounded so well Steve.

Re: Lighting questions

Those kinds of lights tend to give out too much heat and infrared radiation and can worsen the problem. Using fluorescent lights is a much better idea in my opinion. You can use CFLs or tubes if you like and 'cool white' seems like the best kind of bulb to use. :)

They certainly brighten things up though, considering how dull it's been here lately. :) They're delightful.

That's a good size comparison! Cute little thing. :) I've found they can mature quite quickly if you get conditions just right. Good luck!

Looks more like a Trichocereus or something along those lines. Saguaro don't fruit that small and they have different looking fruits.

Re: One man went to sow ......2014 diary

Well it looks like I have a reputation to keep up. 1. Echinocereus? 2. Echinocactus grandis? 3. Gymnocalycium. 4. Mammillaria. 5. Thelocactus leucanthus, methinks. 6. Gymnocalycium? 7. Tricky one. I'd have to go with Echinocereus, I think. :P 8. Thelocactus. 9. Echinocereus for sure. 10. Cory...

Re: Dan's flowers and stuff 2014

Time for a little catching up. The weather hasn't been amazing lately, so there's not that much to report. Beautiful Gymnocalycium ragonesei flowers. https://31.media.tumblr.com/5c09c5edcfb8e728cbed29772558125c/tumblr_n9eaucsyG91s7bjz8o1_1280.jpg https://33.media.tumblr.com/6067d68ff6faa91b1fd7df819...
