Ive noticed that espostoa lanata turns black-brown when aged...is this just corking?

what kind of opuntias grow hair? ive tried to find info but can never know where to look or what to search for...

BTW the baby is the one in the middle, the one on the left is Mammillaria supertexta and the right is a pad of Opuntia aciculata...

i use Miracalgro soil...it dries out pretty quickly though and has a lot of roots and bark in it.
