Re: Northern U.S. Winter Melocactus care

Thank you so much!! I went with the 4 oz, lm all about saving space at this point! I've got some in a 3 seasons room and started watering them last weekend. Lost one Melo that I bought on etsy last summer, it had no roots when it arrived. My Mantanzanus shriveled up severely this winter, it had lost...

Re: Northern U.S. Winter Melocactus care

Happy Spring Steve! We'll I picked up all the ingredients except for the ammonium sulfate. I'm having a hard time finding it in powder form in a small quantity. On Amazon I found a lbs of it in crystal form, would this work?: https://www.amazon.com/Alpha-Chemicals-Ammonium-Sulfate-2SO4-1/dp/B007ODPG...

Re: Northern U.S. Winter Melocactus care

Thanks for the info Steve. I don't see the point in adding anything that's going to become hydrophobic so maybe composted fir bark is out. ?? As it is, when I water my melos, I also water a pot without anything in it other than the same mix my melos are planted in, in order to monitor the moisture. ...

Re: Northern U.S. Winter Melocactus care

Thanks Madkactus! A Cactus grower on etsy was really raving about the Fox Farm soil, so I bought a bag locally. It was the only soil I had on hand at the time I potted the melos. But ever since, in my paranoia and ocd driven NEED to get this right, I've had this nagging concern that every tim...

Re: Northern U.S. Winter Melocactus care

Im using 50% Pumice, 30% granite gravel (chicken grit) and 20% Fox Farm Ocean Forest potting soil. It was so nice to ditch the perlite. I was really disappointed that I couldn't get any pumice locally, especially working in the AG industry for a very large co-op.

Re: Northern U.S. Winter Melocactus care

Alright then! In the house they will stay. I have an irrigation bottle I use to keep from going overboard on the water. Although, I'm finding out STEVE, that my new soil mix, STEVE, drains SOOO well, I'm more concerned about under watering! Yep, 50/30/20 is pretty lean! 🙂 I only have 3 adults, but 1...

Northern U.S. Winter Melocactus care

Is anyone raising melocactus & living in an area with brutal winters? I've seen extremely conflicting info on what temperatures they can handle and if they should have a winter rest & watering in winter (do to geographics). I'm in the Chicago area & have 2 options. In the house, during t...

Re: Mail order melocactus soft

Well that's a big relief! I have purchased 13 in the past month with no prior experience with them. I have been reading up on them endlessly and encountered some contradictions in how to care for them. I'd rather underwater then overwater and I WAS going to wait 3 weeks before introducing small amou...

Mail order melocactus soft

Hello! I purchased a melocactus on Etsy a week ago. I cleaned the roots of all the existing dirt and allowed it to dry out well for 24 hours. I then potted it up in a sharply draining mix. I have not watered it yet. It is wrinkled, it was wrinkly when i got it. However tonight I used my new favorite...

Re: What is this on my new Melocactus??

Oh boy! That is great news!! Thank you so much! I didn't want to expose my others if it was a pest or disease. I haven't spritzed them with water, it doesn't seem like a good idea being brand new to Melos. I think I've read everything I could find regarding melos 2 and 3 times and if it wasn't for t...

What is this on my new Melocactus??

Hello! This is my first time posting here. So happy to have found this amazing site and its wealth of information!! I've only started collecting about a year and a half ago. I've found my one true love, Melocactus. I picked up a Levitestatus Warasii 8 days ago and have noticed something I haven't se...
