Re: Limestone top dressing
Many growers add dolomite to the soil for limestone native cactus. Dolomite is calcium sulfate wont change the PH at least that's what Ive been told. Hi Keith. Dolomite is Calcium-Magnesium Carbonate. It has almost the same liming power as pure Limestone-Calcium Carbonate. It will raise pH in potti...

Steve Johnson you wrote : "You're contending with years of compacted soil, and water is the only way to loosen it. Swish the roots around in a container of water, then gently tease the soil out of the roots with a blunt instrument like a q-tip handle, knitting needle, etc. If roots come out in...

Re: Grass in outdoor cactus beds
I know I'm not directly answering your questions. I'm not 100% sure as I don't usually use chemical herbicides. But, can you paint the herbicide on the target grass rather than spraying? Bigger question: can you edge the beds with a root/runner barrier to prevent the beds getting overrun by the gras...

Tom, that's it for sure. Thanks very much. It has been growing outdoors in a container since 2009. It survives under snow and ice.

Re: Succulent ID
By looking at Llifle.com Succulents I'm thinking its in the Crassulaceae. Orostachys and Rosularia both have flower stalks that kind of look like my plant. Those that don't have flower stalks like mine at all are: Aeonium, Cotyledon, Crassula, Echeveria, Graptopetalum, Graptosedum, Graptoveria I'm s...

Succulent ID
This is a photo soon after I bought this dish garden in a Hypertufa pot at the Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society show and sale in 2009. I still have the greyish rosette succulent on the right side sending out runners. I know it is very common, but I really don't know what it is. Can anyone he...

Re: My seed growing adventures.
One more thing…what type of grow lights are you using? I’m still tinkering around with that aspect as well. Just want to let you know which LED grow light I'm using to keep my warmth requireing cacti over the winter. I bought mine in 2022 and this is the second winter I've used it. Viparspectra XS1...

Re: Echinopsis under grow lights and winter dormancy
Those plants of mine that stay indoors over the winter are under LED lights on for 16 hours each day. They can go outside here in Northern NJ (Passaic County) when temps are above 45 or so. I could put mine out today as it is almost 70 and sunny, but I'm just getting back from being away for a week ...

Re: Opuntia Microdasys v.Albispina failure?
A friend just gave me three fruits of an O. humifusa from which I extracted the seeds. Paul: were your seeds old when you sowed them? Tom in Tucson said to use one year old seed when sowing. Latebloomer asked if anyone had chipped the seed before sowing. I'm thinking that might be a good idea seeing...

Thanks for your answer. I see you have a system already and are willing to follow it. Good for you.
If you could see my algae filled rainwater that I use in the summer for non fertilizer watering, I think you'd faint.

Re: Small intetesting cactus - but how big do these get?
I can't help you with the ID, but your post makes me think of a lot of questions. Sounds like you are trying to landscape a home you may have just bought. Correct? Or no. Very exciting time for sure! Sounds like you have not kept cacti and succulents as houseplants or even as landscape plants before...

Why are you sterilizing your water? Seems extremely labor intensive.
