"False"/partial variegation?
I've got this Echinopsis hybrid seedling (E arbicola X Zelly7) that has what I thought as variegation, but now I am not sure. https://i.imgur.com/1VNbo3s.jpg It was more yellow over summer, but now it was brought inside for winter, the yellow bits are more green? So i am not really sure if it's true...

Re: carnegiea spots
Spot don't look like sunburn to me (unless it's really bad, the sunburn is normally between the spines along the ridges as the spines provide a small amount of shade), but I agree it's P pringlei.

Strange segmented mutation in Haageocereus acranthus?
I've got this H acranthus that I have grown from seed. I got four seedlings from 10 seeds and only one is like this. Rather than growing continuously from the growing point, every so often the growth will stop, and then a new stem emerges directly from the growing point, creating this segmented appe...

Very cool to hear.
I'd ask about getting seeds of it, but being Australian, the import would be a nightmare.

Re: A warning: Spinetoram does not seem to be effective against mealies
Hi, Keith, I'm interested in the home remedy you mentioned, "Old cigars and soap..." As in make a solution from cigars and insecticidal soap? How many cigars? Smoked, or simply cigar? Thanks for any elaboration you can provide. Bret Nicotine in tobacco exists to protect the plant from ins...

A warning: Spinetoram does not seem to be effective against mealies
A quick background: I have two "sets" of insecticide. One is my outdoors insecticide, which I purchase from an agricultural supply store. The stuff from the Ag store is waaay cheaper than the stuff I can buy at the hardware store. For example, 200 g/L permethrin in a 200ml bottle is about ...

Re: Nearly dead cactus
I don't know your local climate, but I would guess that it was frost damage, allowing for some infection to enter the plant from the top down. If you live somewhere warm, substitute frost for sunburn. It can probably be saved by copping below the infected part with a sharp kitchen knife. If the fles...

Pachypodium soil mixes
I bought a few varieties of Pachypodium today. I've already got P lamerei and P geayi which are in a 40% orchid mix, 60% decomposed granite mix (orchid mix here in Australia is mostly decomposed bark, with no peat). They're doing okay-ish, and have put on new growth now that I have separated them fr...

Re: Are you growing your cacti in a soilless mix?
I've moved to a semi-hydroponic mix last spring (September-October last year), and have been using a mixture of about 60% decomposed granite, 20% sea-shell based chicken grit (people have misunderstood me when I have previously mentioned this, thinking it's chicken shells or something, but it's actu...

Second Browningia hertlingiana. Though it may also be a more uncommon Browningia species, like B viridis.

It think this is a Haageocereus based on height and number of ribs. There are several species that grow flowers near the tip like Parodia ("Notocactus") do.
Higher res photos and photos of the growing tip would help.

The growing and losing ribs thing is what made me think it was something other than core rot.LateBloomer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 9:28 pm If you look closely its actually growing and losing ribs...
I can understand that it looks like its collapsing on its self but I think it is just gaining and losing ribs.

Strange Saguaro
Someone shared this on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/cactus/comments/10d03n8/interesting_saguaro/ https://i.imgur.com/gQKn3y1.jpg As the number of ribs seems to go down at the narrow bits I assume that this plant did not enter dormancy in winter, and therefore as the amount of light reduced it et...
