Re: can i repot cacti any time of the year?
Yes, especially in a tropical country. "Vermicast mix" sounds like an extra nitrogen rich substrate. If you have, replace it at least partially with coco-fibre, leaf mould or something else. Some vermiculite addition will also boost water retention properties of the mix if you have to wor...

Re: can i repot cacti any time of the year?
Gymnocalyciums are pretty hardy species compared to some of the others I have been growing. Cacti can be repotted anytime of the year, the question is - Should you? Most cacti tend to become dormant in winter and based on my experience, repotting them in winter does not give me any indication as to...

Re: i got a new haworthia, yay!
i potted her earlier and it looks like my gut was right about telling me to add more pumice! thank you so much for answeringgreenknight wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 7:38 am 30% vermicast would be too much. The second mix would be okay if you sieve out the fines from the sand and just use the coarser stuff.

can i repot cacti any time of the year?
later on i will be picking up a gymnocalycium damsii i requested from a seller. the seller sent me a picture and her soil is mostly inorganic. after acquiring her, should i unpot, wash, and air dry her immediately or wait for a week before that? i will be potting her in a 70/30 pumice and vermicast ...

i got a new haworthia, yay!
a while ago i posted about me accidentally killing a haworthia cooperi while opening a package. a few hours ago we went to the garden to buy soil and a couple of plants and while walking around, lo and behold! a haworthia! it looks like a cymbiformis to me but it could also be a cooperi variety. the...

Re: lithops in the fridge?
I've honestly never heard of lithops in the fridge - just plant them in coarse gritty soil in a terracotta pot (all my Lithops are in terracotta pots despite the fact i'm in Perth) and water very lightly once a week or only when you see them starting to shrivel. are the nights in there quite warm d...

Re: I accidentally broke my haworthia cooperi
update: gumdrop's dead, and yes, i named him gumdrop. he just slowly melted and i didnt have the energy to even touch him for days until i did earlier. it seems like he melted. the middle part that used to be real firm just turned very, very soft, and so did the leaves. he was releasing some yellow-...

lithops in the fridge?
i know there are lots of posts regarding a topic about taking care of lithops in the tropics, but i just wanna know, how do i put them in the fridge? gradually introduce them to the fridge? if so, how? or can i just put them in there overnight immediately? what about the humidity? should i water the...

Re: I accidentally broke my haworthia cooperi
That's a lot worse than you made it sound at first. It may grow anyway, all you can do is wait and see. Too bad about those extra leaves, they could have been rooted to make new plants if they hadn't gotten squished. yeah, sorry about that #-o update: hes looking sad and dull, leaves are getting wr...

Re: I accidentally broke my haworthia cooperi
The outer leaves may shrivel, and that's not a problem if the younger central leaves are okay. There's no inner leaves anymore :( i forgot to inform yall that the upper part got squished and i had to throw it in the trash, so now it's just the remaining lower part. Even the extra leaves that fell o...

Re: I accidentally broke my haworthia cooperi
Wait for a week or two after repotting, then water. Haworthias are winter growers, so once your H. cooperi's roots settle in, you should be seeing new growth fairly soon. By the way, it sounds like you have the right mix. Speaking of Haworthias, you might enjoy this: http://www.cactiguide.com/forum...

Re: I accidentally broke my haworthia cooperi
Relax, Haworthias root easily. Moderate temperatures are perfect, that's when they grow - when it's neither too hot or too cold. Shady but bright is the right idea, no direct sun. See: https://www.haworthia.com/rooting/ his roots were trimmed - theres this fairly thick root about an inch. how kong ...
