Re: Which (succulent) Family is the best for someone who lives in tropics (Indonesia)?

Recently, it felt kinda boring to take care of random plants. I know it's not that many, yet, but I want to specify my plants for the future of my garden. I don't want to do random stuff. I think I want to specified it a bit, I want a family that can grow wild and big. Most cacti grow big, but it d...

Re: Which (succulent) Family is the best for someone who lives in tropics (Indonesia)?

Here is one small recommendation for starting out: try a variety of different kinds of plants, go slowly, and see what you enjoy most and have success with. In addition to cacti, I experiment with bonsai, orchids, peppers, carnivorous plants, tropicals, irises, and more. They need such different thi...

Re: Do any fungicides actually work as a preventative for sensitive species

I am not well-schooled on fungicide by any means, especially when used on cacti, but here in Houston we do deal with extremely high humidity. So I can't answer your question directly, but I can share a few things that might be a bit helpful: 1. For insects, I can second DaveW that diatomacious earth...

Re: What is that pink granular fertilizer?

I FOUND IT. If anyone cares, it's Starkle-G, a brand name of Dinotefuran insecticide.

Yeesh. I've never heard of this stuff. I wondered if it could be a fungicide or pesticide. Another good suggestion, thanks!

It does look a lot like that. You might be right. That's helpful, thanks!

What is that pink granular fertilizer?

Sometimes when I see videos of cacti growers in Thailand, Japan, and other parts of East Asia, I see them using what appears to be a bright pink, crystalline fertilizer, sometimes in addition to Osmocote. I am wondering what this is....presumably something low in nitrogen? You can see it, for exampl...

Re: Cacti - To keep the offsets or not?

This has often resulted in clones being produced in cultivation that are now reluctant to flower, the succeeding generations having normally been raised solely through offsets. That is not the fault of the species or offsetting in nature, but artificial selection in cultivation by constant vegetati...

Re: Cacti - To keep the offsets or not?

Hi all, Rather then start a new thread I figured I would just revive this one. Almost everything that I read about offsets is in the context of propagation, which is cool, but I'm looking for information about how best to nurture the mother plant. Many of my cacti are creating a lots of offsets. I'd...
