Re: A cactus as a Christmas card? Why not!

One of our ex members gave all the guests at his daughter's wedding a little cactus as a memento in 2.5" miniature buckets he made up from offsets from his plants. https://www.gardeningexpress.co.uk/collection-of-cacti-in-zinc-buckets?fee=2&fep=15215&msclkid=b9aa1a2ed2bb177625c845ff3a1...

Re: A cactus as a Christmas card? Why not!

Very Cool! We do family pics on our vacays and I'll make one into a Christmas Card. Very, very special friends get an Alaskan Salmon fillet in their stocking. I fish there annually for the last 21 years and usually have enough from the trip to share. I'm sure that has nothing to do with why they're...

Re: Astrophytum hybrids: later-generation (F2, F3, etc.) crosses

Frank isn't alone in observing this. Group 2 is considered to be the Astrophytum subgenus and group 1 is the Neoastrophytum subgenus. And for anyone who's curious, caput-medusae is also thought to be a Neoastrophytum. See https://www.researchgate.net/publication/288839160_Phylogeny_and_Biogeographi...

A cactus as a Christmas card? Why not!

Every year I send my closest friends and family a special handmade Christmas card. Usually this involves hours of cutting and gluing paper. Last year I put less work into the cards themselves but included Caesalpinia seeds. Following that trend, this year I'm going with cacti pups! Each recipient wi...

Wow, how cool! Thank you for the pictures, and thanks for the fantastic plants, too. It's amazing how the seedlings begin to show their character when they are still so small. I wouldn't have expected so much flecking after only four months. Looking forward to watching mine grow.

Re: Astrophytum hybrids: later-generation (F2, F3, etc.) crosses

G'morning Joseph, I sprit Astrophytum species to two groups. Group 1: Yellow petals and orange throat flower asterias, capricorne, coahuilense Group 2: Yellow petales flower myriostigma, ornatum It is alright to cross species in same group but many abnormal seedlingd will germinate if you crossed G...

Astrophytum hybrids: later-generation (F2, F3, etc.) crosses

Hi all, I recently sowed some "Astrophytum asterias/Onzuka x hybrid" seeds from C and D succulents (thank you!) where the packet was labeled as "Astrophytum asterias/Onzuka x another hybrid." I interpret this to mean these seeds are F2 (or later) crosses between asterias/onzuka h...

BADASS cactus. Definitely saglionis. Pretty common, but not crested ones like this. One of my absolute favorite species. They get huge!

Re: Transplanting Agaves

I agree with samhain, they can tolerate quite the beating in my experience. Digging a larger area around the plant can prevent too much root damage, but you may find the roots have spread far into the ground already. This has also been my experience, although I've never dug up one as large as those...

Re: Why not sow seeds indoors in winter?

Thank you both for your replies. Really appreciate it. I actually started a batch 6 weeks ago just to experiment, and so far the seedlings are looking great. The problem with sowing now wouldn't necessarily be light intensity, if someone lives in a place without frequent overcast, but with the numbe...

Why not sow seeds indoors in winter?

Assume we are talking about seeds that don't require any kind of cold stratification or other special germination methods. The standard advice is to sow seeds in spring, and clearly it makes sense for seedlings to enjoy the spring and summer as they grow. But I sort of....have a bit of a counterargu...

Re: Hana's cacti

I tried to create a new Astrophytu hybrid but the trial was not successful. It was myriostigma cv kikkou x fukuryu banjyaku and I could not see any cacti showing both characters together. Some of them have shown a special variegation called "Sumi Nagashi". Sumi Nagashi means marbling. The...
