I think this is Mammillaria grassior that needs more sun. Mine did same, exposed too shaded, it losts spines at the top. Since I put it in a more sunnier spot, spines are now growing correctly :mrgreen:

Tony, it is useless to add ssp elephantidens because C. elephantidens has no subspecies whatsoever. In the C. elephantidens species, there are : - C. elephantidens - C. elephantidens (syn.
