Re: Discolouration on seedlings

Wow, I never would've guessed spider mites! I've had some major trouble with them in the past, but they always seemed to leave my succulents alone. I've had some seedlings simply dry up and die, maybe it was mites all along. Usually I can spot them, though. I'll try misting them a bit and watering f...

Discolouration on seedlings

Hi again, having some more issues with my seedlings unfortunately (I think). Many of them have been accumulating this crusty white-ish stuff on their sides/tops. I had assumed maybe it was mineral deposits from the water but I wanted to make sure in case it was something worse. You can see on the so...

I didn't store it in the fridge, the store I bought it from did. I assume to prevent any growth, but I don't know!

What are these spots on my cutting?

I bought this cutting the other day. It was stored in the refrigerator, but I didn't ask for how long and I have no idea when the cutting was taken. The base is pretty well scarred over already so it's not that fresh. cactus1.jpg The spots are kind of scattered all over, which makes me think (and ho...

Re: Seedlings randomly shriveling up - why?

Sorry for the late reply, I forgot to check back after not getting any replies for a while! Hmm what are they? Some sort of trichocereus? At 4 months they can still be kept in their high humidity containers and stay moist I generally leave mine moist until 6months. But once you let them dry out they...

Seedlings randomly shriveling up - why?

I've had great success with my four month old seedlings, but have lost about 6 now due to this problem. All the seedlings are in the same tray, under the same light, and receive the same amount of water (watered from below maybe once or twice a week). Occasionally one of them will start turning dark...

Re: Germination

I bought a large batch of seeds from SuccSeed around the same time and two different species never germinated at all. All the others are growing like mad, so I think sometimes it's just kind of hit and miss. They may have been a little older since I bought them near the end of the year. I'm going to...

Re: Theral's germination adventure!

Thought I'd give a little update! Most of my newly sowed seeds have germinated and the caudiciforms are thriving! Going from lower right clockwise - Frailea castanea, Eriosyce crispa, Azureocereus hertlingianus, Copiapoa haseltoniana and Copiapoa cinerea var. Columna alba. Unfortunately the Gymnocal...

Re: Sowing very small seeds: advice needed

With super tiny seeds I simply sow them directly on top of the soil. Once they germinate and grow larger you can sprinkle additional sand or soil on top to help support them if they're not rooted very deeply. I started some Blossfeldia this way a couple months ago and they're so miniscule that they ...

Re: Theral's germination adventure!

Answering your question about Pachypodium transplanting: you are not in a hurry. Let them grow. You may repot them within a year or two, during the growing season. I'm mainly worried about space - they're starting to get a little crowded, they grow so fast! They have their second pair of leaves now...

Re: Theral's germination adventure! Help appreciated!

Wow, these things really sound like a challenge! I'm holding off with them for now until I really know what I'm doing. I'll try to get around to it this weekend, thank you very much for the advice. It really is hard to intentionally neglect these plants. On a positive note, my Pachypodium and ...

Re: Theral's germination adventure! Help appreciated!

Dintheranthus vanzylli RH 3288c I found this species to be tricky and posted about it. Only 2 made it past the tiny stage and are now just small but look like succulents at least. Mine seemed to rot when watered. Those do sound tricky. Do you think keeping them sealed up for a little longer instead...

Theral's germination adventure!

Hi! Since my first attempt at growing from seed went so well, I went ahead and ordered a bunch of seeds from my favourite cacti and succulents to experiment with. I've done some research and some are special cases that I need to read more about (Cyphostemma juttae for example). I have two small gree...

Re: Stenocactus ID

I see, I've been trying to shuffle through various pictures of Stenocacti and they do seem very muddled! I was trying to find out since I wanted to order some Stenocactus seeds but I just ended up going with S. heteracanthus. That one does look very similar George. Many of the cacti I found pictures...

Re: Hello from central Minnesota!

Hey, welcome! I'm looking to start growing some cold hardy cacti outdoors as well, excited to start this spring! One question, how do you put pictures on a comment? It won’t work for me If you click "full editor and preview" below the reply box, you will then see two tabs, "options&qu...
