Re: Watering in very hot weather (38C/100F)
I have never had wet plants get sunburned. I don't mean just cactus, even garden annuals and berry bushes, nothing really gets sunburned from having water on it. I think some species are more prone to root loss in extreme heat than others. My Astrophytum asterias for example DO lose large parts of t...

Re: Hana's cacti
Normal asterias are in flower in 5~6 years after sown seed but some of them are hard to see flowers. They also grow very slowly. The following 2 super kabutos sown seeds in 2010 are still around 6 cm in diameter. I have not seen their flowers yet. These are beautiful. Do nearly solid white plants t...

Watering in very hot weather (38C/100F)
With summer approaching, a topic is on my mind. When outdoor or greenhouse temperatures consistently reach 100F (38C) do you water your cactus more often? I have heard different opinions over the years. I tend to water more often in very hot weather because I have noticed that root loss occurs in so...

Re: Echinopsis subdenudata
I have grown several hundred of these, and I only remember one offsetting freely. However, it was the only one which never bloomed so I gave it away.

Re: Astrophytum seedling leaning
The lower body part of myriostigma/ornatum relatd seedlings is thin as same as on your photo. It will continue for a while and is hard to regain. Since the thin lower part is conected to roots, the development of roots is also poor. I cut the lower part off in spring when seedlings reached to 3 cm ...

Re: Which countries are allowing or restricting shipping plants and seeds during the pandemic?
There can't really be any such list because each country and each port or airport has a fluid situation that has changed many times over the past few weeks. It is not always an issue of the country's laws or guidelines, it is often an issue of truckers, mail drivers, pilots, and port authorities. An...

Re: Astrophytum seedling leaning
Thank you, I may prop them up with small stones. They have been in the same container their entire lives but I did indeed add more substrate to the top at a certain point, but a few keep leaning.

Astrophytum seedling leaning
I have a few of these Astrophytum seedlings (14 months old) that are leaning heavily. Out of about 100 seedlings only 6 are flopping over. I gently propped them up with sandwich picks about 3 weeks ago but when I remove them the plant falls back over. Should I bury it deeper? Does anybody know why t...

Re: Dehydrated Astrophytum asterias on eBay
It is stated that the plant was brought from Asia. So this would have been growing in the tropics and in the tropics they grow really fast also there's no winter season.. Well, depends where in Asia, because China, Japan and Korea do have a winter season, even up to the Tropic of Cancer temperature...

Re: Dehydrated Astrophytum asterias on eBay
Do they never get rest period in the tropics?
I always thought they would be kept dry, if not cold.

I agree! Even when mine come out of long winter staging they're never this shrunken. It looks sick to me.
I was unsure if other people ever see them this shrunken.

Re: Rescued cactus.
Maybe Stenocactus multicostatus? It varies a lot in appearance, including the number of ribs and the shape and length of spines. The spines do tend to get thicker over time if they get tons of sunlight. For this reason, I keep them with my Ferocactus species and give them identical care. In the heat...

Steven and Elizabeth.
Just kidding... these are sold in my local nursery as simply "Echinopsis hybrids."
One parent seems to be Echinopsis grandiflora.
