Re: Treat spines with respect.
I have very good hands. I can catch knives. I would not try to catch a cactus, though. That's for sure.

Akward roots Kalanchoe tomentosa
I recently received a panda plant that was a cutting of another. Unfortunately, it must have been a far off shoot because it's root is nearly perpendicular to the leaves. Is the root at the very base of the leaves more like a trunk and it's OK to be partially exposed? Or do I need to find a more app...

Re: First time growing help.
I'm glad you recommended ferocactus, there's a few species that I think are really cool. Does the grade of sand make much of a difference? And as far as soil, I have some black gold coming, so it'll be good stuff.
What about the baggy btw? Is that just to keep them from bugs or fungus?

First time growing help.
So, I got a lot of free Kalanchoe marmorata seeds, and I would like to try my hand at growing them. I know there are plenty of instructions and examples out there, but I just wanted to hear you guys' opinions, mostly on growth media, and pot size and distribution. I'm getting 100 seeds but I'll prob...

I’m muddling through Skeleton Crew by Stephen King as a prolonged detour from going through Modern Librarians greatest 100 novels. Conrad was boring me silly so I went through some guilty pleasures.

Looks like a ferocactus to me, MAYBE f. glaucescens or f. latispinus? These are very inexperienced guesses, though.

Re: Ariocarpus Fissuratus- Can't figure this one out.
I am by no means an expert (I'm buy no means anything but a clueless beginner suffering from the Dunning Kruger effect), but I'd say, if not both, then a lack of water. Sun burn would lead to more discoloration (as if that's easy to determine with this species) and the leaves seem to be lilting enou...

Ferocactus gracilis real color
So, I've been looking at species of Ferocactus in the last few days, when I came across a picture of a Ferocactus gracilis v coloratus that is a vibrant blue, compared to all the other pictures I've seen. Is this just editing done to sells some seeds, or are there f. gracilis out there that are this...

Re: Licespray's Growing from Seed (continuous updates of my progress)
I have two sets of seeds coming in by mid to late January. It's sure gonna be interesting for someone with my lack of a green thumb. I'll probably look to this really helpful and descriptive thread. Keep it up. Hell, maybe you could write a short by more in depth general guide (cause that's not aski...

Re: Is Mammillaria longimamma still a Mammillaria?
I never said anything about the code, just about the modern practice of first described, first named. And if you feel attacked for some reason, I'm sorry (you seem somewhat worked up, but I could be reading far to into it), but we can disagree without being angry about it.

Re: Is Mammillaria longimamma still a Mammillaria?
But classifications are not mandatory, you can use any validly published name you like as Spence says. I disagree with this statement. While it has certainly occurred many times, especially for species identified before instant communication became prevalent. However, modernly, it's fairly wide pra...

Well, I used it in the US, but I don't know if works anywhere else. If you'd like the check, the code is TAKETEN. I probably should have included that in the first post.

Ebay 10 dollars off any 10.01+ purchase
I don't know if the quality would leave something to desire, but I just wanted to point out that eBay has a ten dollar off any purchase larger than ten dollars, excluding shipping. There seem to be a lot of cuttings and seeds and plants in general there, that would be nice for smaller cacti and succ...
