Re: edithcolea grandis

I've around 30 edithcolea plants. 1 clone from Las Anood, Somalia, 1 clone from Socotra 3 clones from Kenya. I've found that there is quite some difference between the clones in what they like in terms of watering. The Somalia and Socotra clone do best when allowed to have the soil get nearly dry in...

6-lobed Edithcolea grandis flower

Yesterday morning 3 flowers opened on my Edithcolea grandis (from Sagala, Kenya).
And if that wasn't enough, one of them is 6-lobed, instead of the usual 5-petals...
Anyone seen this before?

Indeed, the seeds need to be fresh.
And yes, most stapeliads do well with a dormant period at low temperatures. Just some do not, like many Somalian stapeliads. It's a vary variable family of plants, also in their needs to prosper.

Short lived? I don't know about Stapelia gemmiflora, but I do have many Edithcolea plants. They do differ from cacti in the sense that cactus tissue lives for a much longer time. But then we are talking about single branch or stem, not the whole plant. For Edithcolea it's fairly simple: the plant st...

Very nice flower. Although strangely looking different than mine, which has been flowering since couple of weeks.

Is there much variation within the species?

The key with Edithcolea believe it or not is to keep it constantly moist during the heat of the summer, along with fertilizing. Watering should be withheld during the dormant dry season. They can take light frosts but it is safer to keep them on the warm side in the winter. I have the same experien...

Seed pods on Ceropegia woodii

To my amazement, a Ceropegia woodii plant in the living room of my parents house has seed pods! As far as I know, it needs two different clones to get these. I can only think of a Ceropegia Sandersonii that stands in the same room. It also means that there is some bug dwelling there that has fertili...

Edithcolea flowers!!

My two larger Edithcolea plants have flowers! They are in the incubator under artificial lightning, with daytime temperature 42°C/108°F and night temperatures around 20°C/68°F. They are in non-organic soil kept constantly moist. Once every 3 weeks they are given some fertilizer (cactus/succulent fer...

I found an answer myself by rooting a cutting of Edithcolea grandis myself.
The trick appears to be heat... I took a cutting, let it dry for two days and then put it in a grainy soil at 30-35°C and after one week it had already two 5mm roots!

Huernia flowers under artificial light

Much to my surprise, my Huernia brevirostris flowers. The plant is grown under artificial light (a combination of led lightning, with CF lamps of 2700° and 6500°K). So while I can say that spring has really started to take off, this plants does so without experiencing 'spring'. http://www.cactiguide...

Maximum temperature?

I'm building a small greenhouse for Edithcolea grandis plants. As it's little, it can quickly change temperature in the sun. I therefore include a ventilation system that starts venting once a certain treshold is reached. But I wonder what is an acceptable maximum temperature in a greenhouse for har...

I've grafted a Schlumbergera on a pereskiopsis. It grows very fast. It also flowers a lot. I used a Pereskiopsis porteri. This plants has a thick trunk and it seems to support the scion pretty well. In fact the Schlumbergera is quite big now and is about 45cm/18inch in diameter and is well on its wa...

Edithcolea grandis cuttings

Dear all, I would like to have some advice regarding Edithcolea grandis. I finally am the happy owner of such plant. It's clearly grown from seed as far as I can tell, and regarding progagation I do have a question: Has anyone of you ever tried and succeeded in rooting a cutting from Edithcolea gran...
