Very interesting topic. I'm looking forward to the event. There is a very interesting lecture on that topic that I found on YouTube.

Re: A surprise in the greenhouse.
of course, everything depends on the climate, in California it will grow in spring and autumn, in my location new segments grow at the end of summer and autumn, if spring is warm then new segments will grow, due to high temperatures in summer there is no growth. Tephrocactus are one of the few that ...

Re: Can this Cacti be helped?
I should have mentioned that the diameter of the cactus is around 6" at the healthy looking part. Interesting video, thank you. If I have to cut it with a knife to save it, I will. 😳 when you cut off the rotten part of the cactus, you will need to put it in a shady place to dry the wound. Afte...

yes, as soon as the wound dries a little, feel free to put substrate on it and do not water it. I have a good feeling about your cactus.

Re: A surprise in the greenhouse.
nice story, I have a similar one. Tephrocactus take root easily, but they are also prone to rotting, so be careful with watering. They are among my favorite cacti.

Time to start up the National Croatian Succulent Society and the National Finnish Succulent Society...! If you are starting from scratch, perhaps consider the Croatian Desert Plants Society, etc. It is still not a perfect description but it might save you from having to define what a succulent is a...

The problem with DVD is that most new laptops don't have a DVD reader, including mine. And I'm not a supporter of DVDs because the cost of postage is just as unacceptable as with printed editions, but the possibility of downloading, like with e-readers such as Amazon kindle, is what I would most lik...
Re: BCSS
I think that after years of growing cacti, all publications make sense, whether they are journals, books for beginners, or the latest botanical editions for those who want to know more. My favorite publication is Taxonomy of the Cactacea, Joel Lode Vol. I and Vol. II and I can't wait for Vol. III an...

Re: What can I do to save this cactus?
for Trichocereus I use soil mix: 30% eathworm, 30% standard cactus soil mix, 20% perlite and 20% mineral substrate also it will be fine if you use 50% organic (earthworm or peat) and 50% mineral (perlite or pumice or lava) It is best to plant Trichocereus in a larger container, unlike other cacti, t...

Re: Summer dormancy and rain
We’ve been experiencing a bit of a heat spell recently here in Southern California with night temps consistently over 75°F. I’ve been advised that my cacti are probably in summer dormancy because of this, and to stop watering them. It is currently 101°F outside and I am protecting my plants from th...

Unfortunately, Croatia is one of the few countries in Europe that does not have a national society of lovers and growers of succulents and cacti. Not few I think. For my sorry we here in Finland also haven't society as e.g. Portugal hasn't. :( Facebook communities usually unite mostly very unexperi...
