Re: Handy Gizmos
I use a kitchen funnel to help direct water to the soil line when a cactus overhangs the pot or does not allow me to pour water in the typical way. The funnel also works great when i need to keep water off the body of the cactus ie. Blue cactus or rot prone cacti. My "watering cans" are ac...

Re: Root behavior in porous vs. nonporous pots
I also prefer plastic pots over clay pots. I have found that cacti in clay pots do not form a good root ball and have a tendency to wrap its roots around the sides of the pot. Plastic pots allow you to pack more cacti in a smaller area and allow you to pull it out of the pot easily whenever you need...

Re: Four unknowns
I agree with Tom in Tucson about the fourth cactus. I have seen it identified as a thelocactus setispinus. This cactus will have nice flowers.

Re: Handy Gizmos
I found out that I could wrap a large, hooked ferocactus with a soda/ pop carton which made it easier to repot. I cut the carton flat and wrapped around the cactus and taped it in place. I had no flesh wounds:)

Dropped cactus and split stem
I am not sure if I am posted under the correct topic. I want to let everyone know it is possible to "graft" cacti that have a horizontal crack or split in its stem. I have had a top heavy cactus fall off my greenhouse bench and crack the stem in half. The fall split the stem half way throu...

Treatment of pests
I have read that when you spray pesticides, ie.isopropyl alcohol, Neem oil, or other pesticides, that you will need to keep the cactus or other succulents out of direct sunlight. My question is:: does that only apply when the pesticide is still wet and not quite dry or is it during the whole period ...

Repetitive mealy bugs or spider mites issues
I have a few cacti that seem to be prone to spider mites or meally bugs each year. My Echinopsis chamaecereus is really bad at getting the pests. What do all of you do to prevent those cacti from getting those pest? Do you have a special preventative measure that you do? Do you use systemic insectic...

Spring prep for cactus and succulents ? Acclimating cacti?
I live near Cleveland, Ohio with a zone 6 growing zone. I grow my cacti and succulents outdoors in a greenhouse during the spring and summer and indoors under grow lights during the winter. I fertilizer at a 1/4 strength tomato fertilizer once monthly until the last application for the season in Aug...
