Re: Weird thing here or Do the stock induces the scion to bloom?

Were the Schlumbergeras rooted and growing well before the graft or off a particularly vigorous specimen? I have to wonder because with how frequently Schlumbergera flowers with almost no effort may play a role. I've recently been experimenting with grafting seedlings to Schlumbergera and it has bee...

Re: Reputable grow light brands?

The Mars Hydro 300 design is replicated all over the world and it's not necessarily the pinnacle of grow lights. I've found it to be good for small to medium cacti and succulents and in some cases too powerful for seedlings. Most cannabis growers find it satisfactory for veg and abysmal for flowerin...

Re: Tips and Tricks for Growing Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides

Thanks for the feedback Aloinopsis. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one struggling to get this one to take off. Your epi mix looks quite nice and simple. Lately my mix has been: orchid bark (small to medium pieces), granular diatomaceous earth, coconut coir, and fresh sphagnum moss. I'm likel...

Re: Grow light for an Opuntia microdasys

I don't quite understand the science with how light and grow lights work but I do know from practical application that the one you were using is probably not going to grow much of anything. Is one from eBay or Amazon? Fairly affordable? From my experience t5 HO grow lights are the most reliable for ...

What's the longest wait time you've had from pollination to fruit seed body?

I'm curious because most of my Turbinicarpus go from pollination to seeds in the dried flower in 10 days or less whereas most of my Lophophora take weeks, one as long as seven weeks now.

Re: dark-bodied Gymnocalyciums

I have Gymnocalycium oenanthemum seedlings right now that are a nice smoky black. They really stand out and contrast well with their pure white spines. Looking at photos of mature specimens suggests that most go to a grey-green.

Re: Weird looking cactus!

I have thought about seeing if I could graft three of these together to make a stoplight of colours. I'm sure it would be visually appealing and if it worked the Florida and California growers would have already put it in stores.

Re: vitt13's grafts

Vitt13, beautiful photos and thank you for sharing your growing experience with us. It's amazing how Pereskiopsis can work differently for so many people. Some can't kill and others struggle to get it to even root. I have a few questions for you... 1. Where did you get your forma Point Pelee Nationa...

Tips and Tricks for Growing Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides

I'm an avid fan of Rhipsalis and have most of the species doing quite well with a modified orchid/epi mix, prevent from fully drying, and bright indirect light. I am noticing though that for the few years I have had R. mesembryanthemoides that all of my plants (about a dozen) are the same size with ...

Hanazono, I notice the grid fence or wiring in most of your posts. Is that to keep them off the bottom of the container or keep them seperated?

Re: Pereskiopsis growing methods

Since the vast majority of (maybe all of it) Pereskiopsis in the cactus trade is from cutting I wonder if certain genetics are playing a role in poor growth. I've tried my best to keep track and label the source of mine throughout the years and there have definitely been Pereskiopsis that have been...

Re: Cat Litter / Clay / Turface ?

I prepare various things for the coming spring in winter including potting-mix materials. I mix clay grain in seed rising mix around 20%. The clay grain is also used as cavity filler during rooting of degrafted scions. I used clay base cat litter for several years. I sifted the cat litter and mixed...

Re: Cat Litter / Clay / Turface ?

I'll be following this closely because I've only rarely seen the term "fired clay" on the cat litter bag, just "clay" and "non-clumping." For some reason or another it is the cheaper alternative so I initially bought a few different 50 lb bags for about $30 CAD. I used ...

Re: Growing from seed outdoors

As a Canadian, I have been attempting to put together a collection of our three native species of cacti that are only growing outdoors. So far I have only been able to keep the Opuntia stable and reproducing consistently each year. That said, I've started about two dozen species of Escobaria and Ech...
