Re: Cactus ID help , please

Not sure it is Parodia (Notocactus) rutilans since that has more of a fine N. mammulosus type spination and is one of the few Notocacti with reddish rather than the usual yellow flowers. "Rutilans" means reddish, a reference to the flower, so your flower colour should decide. Notocactus r...

Re: Cactus ID help , please

Pompom my well be correct that it's Parodia rutilans, definitely correct that flowers will help. The flower bud is growing everyday :D so I'm hoping that it will bloom as we enter Spring so that its identity is revealed, although I have to admit I quite like it being a bit of an enigma too

Re: An interesting mongabay cacti conservation article

The original paper is an excellent read. I am currently writing up a follow-up paper on cacti under climate change, and I've used the range maps the IUCN group has created. I'll post a link for you when it's in review. I totally agree , a very interesting and pertinent paper. Thanks ! that would be...

Re: Cacti conservation

Hi MD. I just looked on Ralph Martin's numbers database and the ones from Poconchile are the original population Ritter found. http://www.fieldnos.bcss.org.uk/finder.php?Plant=Islaya+krainziana Evidently Karel Knize (KK) decided to call the Peruvian population Islaya krainziana v. longispina. Yes w...

Re: Cacti conservation

Islaya krainziana is doing quite well in captivity since both Ritter and Knize originally sold the seeds and now many seed dealers offer seed from cultivated plants. In some cases ex situ conservation works better than in situ conservation, or even conservation by botanical gardens who can't grow e...

Re: Cacti conservation

A population of Islaya krainziana has now been found just over the border in Peru, but the original Chilean population seems to have died out in recent years. Both Ritter and Knize collected it and when my friend Roger Ferryman first went to Chile in the 1980's there were still living plants in Chi...

Re: Cactus ID help , please

Look here: http://cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Parodia Something from the Notocactus group. Thanks for this George ! :D , I think pompoms suggestion that it is Parodia rutilans is probably correct , it seems to have a lot of characteristics of that species. So , an Uruguayan cactus , cool ! =D>

A review / reccomendation on some ethnobotanical books on cacti

Hi everyone , Just thought I would mention/ review a couple of books I read last year on the ethnobotanical relationships of cactus with human civilization's in the America's , it might be of interest to someone. 1. Peyote Hunt: Sacred Journey of the Huichol Indians (Symbol, Myth and Ritual) : This ...

Re: Cacti conservation

Extinction is an interesting question for seed bearing plants. People tend to say a plant is extinct if they cannot find any living plants of the species. However it depends how long viable seed can remain in the ground as to whether the species is extinct and if it will regenerate when conditions ...

Re: Cacti conservation

If you want a list of CR/EN species then check the links in my signature. I also have a list of (possibly) extinct species on my CR list. Hi mdpillet, Thank you ever so much for your reply and apologies for my late reply. I am most definitely interested in reading more on the subject of CR/EN cacti...

Re: Cactus ID help , please

Cacti in general like a fast draining soil. Some have requirements for dryness that are stricter than others. Growers seem to favor a mixture of peat moss with some small percentage of perlite. And they seem to be fairly successful in growing their cactus. For the most part cacti are, in gereral , ...

Re: Story of my suicidal plant

A very appropriate name Elie , I'm considering naming my cacti too now :) I'd have to buy a book-of-names... I've some 98 separate pots... and I have a small collection compared to some of this forums members. Hahaha  , you might possibly have to begin naming them in different languages , how ...
