Re: mammillaria sp.

This might be a mammillaria voburnensis, pretty similar to m. karwinskiana. They look much alike, but have slight differences starting from the way of growing to spination and shape of tubercles. They also have different maximum size. M. voburnensis forms clumps which m. karwinskiana doesn't do sinc...

Re: Quick question here, about repotting and buds

That largest bud in the first picture didn't look right to begin with, it was abnormally pale. These buds are the color they should be. How fast the buds develop depends on the temperature, these need warmth to flower. Buds will stop developing when it gets too cool, and resume when it's warm enoug...

Re: New ID please

That's a beautiful mammillaria camptotricha! According to llifle this species is naturally little softer, so no need to worry about that. I wanted to say this because I too bought this species recently and was worried it was dehydrated/rotting/dying, fortunately that was not the case.

Re: Separating fact from fiction

I'm not that experienced with cacti that I could say anything as truth, but I think maybe this "midsummer dormancy" thing has something to do with the cacti metabolism? They are CAM plants after all. What I've read about CAM, the most important thing is that the plants open their stomata a...

Re: What should I do with this medley - Cast your vote!

I'd go with C. It's because the mammillarias are both clumping species, so why keep them together trying to fight of space when they can thrive by themselves and form absolutely beautiful and stunning clumps.

Re: Quick question here, about repotting and buds

Here's a picture of the two buds, I pointed them with red. The one with orange arrow is a bud which is confusing me. It kinda looks dead, but doesn't look like the largest bud the plant aborted and dried completely (the blurry one in front). The orange looks like it has some life in unlike the bud I...

Re: The Last of This Seasons Flowers

Also, my M. hahniana is doing something very peculiar right at the moment, and I'm going to post a topic on it in Member Topics in just a short period of time. You should go look at it. I know you are little busy now with repotting and recovering from the strom, but I just remembered you said this!...

Re: Repotting very large Epiphyllums

If the plant is really big, I'd change only the top part of the soil. That's how you can give the plants nutrients too. Of course fertilizing is other way to give the plants nutrients, but they'd appreciate fresh soil too. I've read old plant's do not like to be unpotted and with them you should cha...

Re: Help please to ID this cactus

A picture from above would help too, but I'd say it's some kind of gymnocalycium. A really old one which had some kind of trauma when younger.

Re: Quick question here, about repotting and buds

What now? The gymno didn't appreciate the repotting and dried the largest flower bud few days after which was unfortunate but excepted. I also excepted it to abort the other ones too. But it didn't. Now it has two buds left. The pink one visible in picture and one slightly out. They look pretty same...

Re: Overwintering between windows

Hi! I am from Sweden and also have some problem with overwintering. My three layer windows are in one piece so I can not fit anything between the layers. But I think it's a bad idé, when the temperatur drops at night you would risk freezing your cacti. Better to place the cacti on the window sill a...

Re: Overwintering between windows

Hello pompom In theory i see no problem with what you are suggesting but i would worry about the potentially high humidity and stagnant cold air. Is the humidity high in your winters? What will be the temperatures at night in between the glass? Will it get overly hot in the sun (is there any?)? All...

Overwintering between windows

In northern countries we must have multiple windows layered to prevent the coldness coming inside during winter months. My apartment for example has three layered windows. I encountered this advice about overwintering cacti in finland. It's about overwintering the cacti between the layers of the gla...

Re: Pompoms first seeds

I've had a whole batch of seeds lose their growth point. After some quick research, the cause could be fungal or bacterial or viral. I don't know for sure....something microscopic  Thanks for the info! I love how I can learn new things here every day! I'll say UFO ate this ones point. I sounds...

Re: Pompoms first seeds

The small seedling indeed looks like an alien! It looks like the initial growth point was damaged and thats why it looks segmented. I like its messy hairs. It could be going monstrose... George said same thing about the damage of growing point. It can happen without physical damage? I don't remembe...
