Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

Well if I gotta wait 2 years I better do them the best I can. I don't mind the extra bit of work. After knowing all of this is what I gotta do to produce healthy seedlings it amazes me how any cacti grow out from seed in the wild! I'll fashion up the jars and post up pictures when I'm ready!

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

Just ordered some filter disks and self sealing injector ports in case it dries out I can give the substrate some sterile water without compromising the seal.

Planted a bunch of Lithops, Titanopsis, Aloinopsis, Faucaria, Pleisopilos and Argyroderma tonight. Hoping for sprouts soon!

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

I used to have mason jar lids fitted with a micro filter paper when I grew shitake and oyster mushrooms. It essentially provided a sterile barrier for fresh air and kept humidity around 85-90%. Could I use the same method for these cacti? I could fashion a glovebox, break out the pressure cooker, fu...

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

That's a long time to keep a substrate clean. How soon could you graft them? I've read 1 year on some.

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

Awesome thank you for the quick response guys. So how long would you keep Blossfeldias, Strombocactus and Ariocarpus in the baggies? 90 days? Or longer? I planted the Cleistocactus mix, Mammilaria Bombycina and Echinofossulocactus Erectocentrus last night. So hopefully soon they will sprout up and I...

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

So I just ordered an obscene amount of seeds online($75 worth!!) and I've got quite the list now. While I'm a bit overwhelmed by the quantity I'm ready to get these planted soon. I know it's gonna be a long list but I'm gonna post the whole thing here to see if I can get any tips or tricks or experi...

Re: ID help with Parodia??

I figured it was lack of light with the spines. Who knows how long it sat on the shelf inside the store. It's been getting plenty of light lately under a standard CFL bulb now though. It gets several hours of direct light from that and a few more from the window. Upgrading to LED panels soon though....

ID help with Parodia??

Bought this beauty late last summer and haven't had much luck getting a positive ID on it. Research leads me to believe that it may be P. Microsperma, but the old flowering pattern here is throwing me off, and I keep finding contradictory info on google. Flowers appear to have came from the apex of ...

Acanthocereus Grafting questions.

I recently read you can use Acanthocereus Tetragonus as grafting stock and it's supposed to work just as well as Pereskiopsis with more natural scion growth. I'm asking this because Pereskiopsis is so dang expensive but I have a small Acanthocereus cluster with 15-20 7ish" stems and some 20 mor...

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

Dang there's a bunch down there! Can't wait to get these outside in some real sunshine this year! Do P. Erubescens get more red with age. The spines on mine are super red. Even the cotton on the areoles have a reddish tint.

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

I microwaved the Blue Torch and Lithop substrate for 3 minutes and didn't get any mold or any contaminations. And it may have been more seed viability and conditions but they germinated much faster since they weren't fighting off an infection.

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

I've grown a lot of P. erubescens seedlings, but I've never planted them - they come up as volunteers. Growing in the pot with their mother, without extra humidity, they don't grow very fast. Posted a picture in 2015, 4th one down here - http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=3593...

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

I even tried a little Peroxide spray on the cobweb mold and it never worked. It was really resilient. That battle lasted for a bit. I think I may have left them covered longer otherwise. Same with the other seedlings. I didn't want to chance contamination again so I was a bit jumpy. Next time I'll b...

Re: Sage's Seedling Adventures

I took the plastic off early on the P. Erubescens because I got a bit of cobweb mold that wouldn't go away so I decided to dry it out. I keep them somewhat damp now and I can tell they are responding. I may re wrap the others for a bit longer. I just planted 24 Pleiospilos Nelii seeds. How long shou...

Sage's Seedling Adventures

Thought I should share the progress on my seedlings. First I have Parodia Erubescens. Seeds were sown on Nov. 15th 2016. They haven't grown much since they sprouted. Is this normal for this species? Or am I missing something? There are 14 in total. They stayed under plastic wrap the 1st month and I ...
