New and need help with identification

Post by John C »

Hi, My name is John I am 13 and I have always grown a few cactus just cause I liked them. After finding this website I want to grow more! :D But I need help with identifying my cactus. I will try to get all of the pictures up today.

1. I think this is a Ferocactus but i'm not sure what species. (sorry for the bad picture quality!)

I also own 2 bromeliads an old mans cactus(doesn't look so good.... My cat ate part of it) and a jade plant. My collection is small, but I think it will be growing!

Hi, Welcome!
Wow, 13yo...you'll have some awesome specimens when ya make it to my age! :)

1. Ferocactus emoryi
2. Not a cactus, but a succulent. It's a Euphorbia, but not sure which species, maybe trigona?
3. Stenocereus pruinosus?
4. Stetsonia coryne
5. Mammillaria something...polythele?
6. Aloe?

Thank you! :D

The guy at the cactus plantation said that #6 grows a 15ft flower when it is mature then the plant dies.

If it dies after blooming, then it must be an Agave? Aloes don't die after blooming (naturally ;) )

John,
Well done..at your age I had 200 cacti and succulents...looks like you're well on your way!

#1 looks like Ferocactus emoryi

#2 is definitely a Euphorbia, but almost certainly not E. trigona ... or else it would just have three ribs. I keep seeing this species, but don't know what it is. And the leaves will (should) die off during the winter.

As for the rest...I'll leave it to the experts.

I don't think the Mammillaria is M. polythele, it has bristles and pyramidal tubercles. I think it might be M. karwinskiana?
