The Cactus Family for $62 on Amazon

Post by TimN »

Apparently Amazon.com got a few new copies of The Cactus Family and is blowing them out for $62.

The used ones seem to be somewhat more realistically priced. They guy at $750+ for a used copy is optimistic!

FYI!

It looks like the book may have been reprinted making it more affordable now. Timber press has them for sale on their website again as well for $99. I have a feeling there will be "remainders" for cheap soon.

At the CSSA show they had it for $95. Looked new.
I'll probably see them again later this month, so if anybody wants me to, i can get it for them if they miss out on the Amazon deal.

I noticed while "Googling" some stuff lately that "The Cactus Family" is featured at Google books.

Of course the entire book isn't presented but there is plenty to look at and possibly may have the exact pages you are looking for.

Just thought I would point out/pass along. Maybe the preview will help ease the big purchase price.

It's a reprint: "Third printing 2008"

I bought one as a "backup" in case I messed up my $200 first edition, but first editions keep their value, so I'm gonna switch!

I was at the DBG yesterday for PeterBs presentation and wandered through the gift shop. They had The Cactus Family on the shelf for retail ($99). I flipped open the cover and noted that it said 3rd printing.

I'll have to check my book and see if it's a first or a second.

I didn't know there were three runs. I though the most recent batch was the 2nd printing.

I got my copy today from Amazon. Looks great!
Found a few books in a used book store a while ago for next to nothing;
"Cacti of the Southwest" by Earle
"Cacti of California" by Dawson
"Growing Cacti & Succulents" by Wilson & Johnston
"Cacti" by Leese

Earle's book is a funny one. Definitely one of the best resources for US cacti in many ways. But also full of incorrect info. So you kind of have to check some of what he says against other authors. I use Earle's book all the time, though, in spite of its flaws.

Cactus Family does have a good number of images, but not nearly as many as I had hoped. Also for some strange reason, some of the images he included are (apparently) the dried up remains of where a once living plant used to be.

I'm afraid that if you want an image for every cactus (just about), you'll need to shell out the big bucks for the New Cactus Lexicon.

However, the Cactus Family is in a very intuitive, easy to read encyclopedia-like format. I still would recommend it if you are only going to get one book. You can use it for the names and descriptions and then hit the web for images. Still not 100% this way, but I think you'll get the most "bang for your buck".
