for the first five pictures, taken an Huntington Library and Gardens, San Marino, CA.
I think that the plant has spines too many and too large.
About Opuntia Anderson says it has no spines. Britton and Rose also say are absent or rarely develop minutes spines on older joints.
In description of Opuntia dejecta, Andersen say about the spines that they are ussually two and spreading somewhat and log to 1.6 in (4cm)
I think this configuration of two spins is visible, especially on images with flowers.
What do you think?

It would appear you are correct, those photos are not O. cochenillifera.
O. auberi and O. dejecta both have very similar growth forms, very similar flowers and grow in the same basic geographic areas. It's most likely one of those.
I grow O. auberi and it's basically spineless, but can have random spines, seedlings are quite spiney. O. auberi has flowers that are near identical to O. cochenillifera in every way. I have never seen O. dejecta or it's flowers.

DBG has a plant that looks like that. I can't remember what it was, but I put it up for ID in the forums before. Darryl you remember the plant I was talking about? I don't remember the plant either, but those spiny plants aren't Nopalea cochenifera.. All the ones I have are spineless.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
