Don't know what took me so long...

Post by daiv »

Read any good books lately?

Well I finally picked up a copy of Britton and Rose "the Cactaceae" - a used copy from the Chino library of all places. Anyway, I don't know why I waited so long to get a copy, but it will be a fun reference. I know these are available on-line, but it is handy to have the actual books. I also never got Backeberg's Lexicon either. I should like to do that eventually.

Mapping the Cacti of Mexico is cool, and I still dip back into The Cactaceae" from time to time for reference. Trying to get the history on Escobaria clorantha versus desertii, for example. I think Britton and Rose did an amazing job, considering.

Re-read Powell and Weedin recently also, as I thought I was going to Big Bend. Ended up in Sonora, bribing police.:-)

I just got a copy myself a month ago. I was in a used book store and they had a set in great condition so I snapped it up. Despite changes in taxonomy and the addition of new species in the past century, it still covers most of the known species of cactus. Also, I find keys incredibly useful, and they are hard to find in books outside of floras and monographs.

Yes, no matter what taxonomic system a person prefers, all cactus enthusiasts owe a lot to the work of those authors.
