Are You Planning to Go?

Post by Buck Hemenway »

The 34th Biennial Convention of the Cactus & Succulent Society of America happens in San Diego, CA this year from April 24 - 29.

This is a gathering of the most devoted C&S enthusiasts in the world. Check out the details, click here.

I will definitely be there.

Me too! Really looking forward to it. I've always wanted to explore San Diego. This is the perfect excuse!

Probably a stupid question, but I am asking anyway. Is this is open to all people, not just members? It sounds like an awesome event. :)

For reasons of liability more than anything else, the convention is open to members. Joining the CSSA amounts to taking a subsctription to the CSSA Journal which is great value at $48 per year. Everyone who gets the Journal is a member of CSSA.

And Daiv, I really hope you can get there.

I registered on-line today...so now I'm committed.

I have to make a stop on the way so I'll be driving!

Barring any unforeseen circumstances I plan on being there.

BTW, I snuck into the event in Tucson without being a member in '09. I'm a member now, though.

Unfortunately my condo in SD is rented until June, so I'll have to make other arrangements. Campland, maybe?
Disclaimer: I'm in sunny Arizona, so any advice I give may not apply in your circumstances.

Too far away for me, but take lots of pictures and share the experience please!

It seemed to me there were a few campgrounds way out east of San Diego in some very pretty country, a good drive away but nice. Maybe out around Campo or Portrero.

Well, I made a mistake on planning around my teaching job and for some reason was under the impression that the convention had at least a significant opening or closing segment over a weekend. So I might not be there after all.

Haven't past conventions included more weekend time either for the opening or closing events? The scheduling of the conference all on weekdays makes it difficult for me to go. I realize it's silly of me to notice only now that it's all weekdays.

At best I might be able to get there Thursday night and attend Friday.

Anyway, if I don't get out there, hope you all have an amazing time and take amazing pictures.

:-)

May be less than thought. How about other SoCal members such as Tony, Mike, etc.?

I just checked scheduling of the past several conventions and the most recent ones did indeed run Friday through Wednesday, but it looks like many before that were Sunday-Thursday or Monday-Friday. Interesting. I got spoiled by the one two years ago in Tucson and just assumed they all ran Friday-Wednesday.

For anyone interested in the history and scheduling of the CSSA conventions, here's a web page put together by Chuck Staples, CSSA historian extraordinaire:

PS- I thought this was great, from the 1981 convention in Albuquerque:

"University of New Mexico--room rates $6 per person per night plus $1 parking fee per day--meals at La Posada Dining Hall cafeteria breakfast & lunch each $2.50 per person and dinner $2.75 per person
Registration Fee

$25 per person--included 2 luncheons"
