Interesting thread! When I have more time I will read about this more thoroughly, however, as Jens said this is by no means a professional contest. It is more an amateur/for fun contest. I think the term close-up would probably be more appropriate to use in the future, but I too feel that being that specific in the rules may take the fun out of it for some.

Interesting discussion here!

Hey DaveW - this is indeed interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing the links too. That is very helpful.

Sure, we are not overly technical on the contests here - it is about fun, but nothing wrong with learning as we go either. You explain things in a very clear way and that is great.

I think we could have "the most unhealthy, poorly grown, unrecognizably etiolated plant" contest. :-)

We had something like that for the October "Halloween" contest once.

Yes, we have had a contest similar to that idea before, but it has been a while. It may be something we could do in the 2014 contest year :-k

Good idea!

How about "skin"?
Every day, after supper, Granny walks two miles. We haven't seen her in years.

Could have a good headstart on all of you then, just have to head down to my local big box and grab one of the Epi cuttings they are selling. Parked in a dark corner indoors, new growth look more like Rhipsalis than Epi!

I think that will happen one way or the other. The hard part is remembering to take a picture of it!

Or the prettiest picture of a dead succulent... I like the skeletons of a Carnegiae, for instance.

Hi Daiv, I just looked at all the Photos and they're just gorgeous! I have a suggestion if I may. How about photo categories like all yellow flowers or all red or all pink etc etc.
Or only showcasing spines? Most cacti are very beautiful when photographed from the top only, with no flowers, and you could make a seperate category for that. I would assume the voting would be easier and perhaps fairer?
Just a thought!
