This is my first cactus. Reviewing photos on this forum I think this may be a mammalaria rhodantha. When I purchased at nursery, flowers had fallen off. Nursery indicated that flower stems would fall off over time and did not need to be pruned.
Any suggestions for care to improve chance I see flowers next year??

I don't believe that's a mamm. It looks more like something in the Echinocereus genus.

It's Parodia erubescens (syn. Notocactus schlosseri), see: http://www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/CACT ... schlosseri
I've got several - the seeds fall in the pot and sprout, you get a bunch of baby ones growing around it. I just save the best of them.
Flower buds are set during the dormant season. Ideally, cacti should be kept cool and dry over the winter, see: http://www.cactus-art.biz/note-book/Dic ... r_rest.htm
If you can't provide temperatures that cool, just do the best you can.

Thank you Lactus, greenknight and antisepp for your replies. I reviewed the images of “Echinocereus genus” and “Notocactus schlosseri/Parodia erubescens“ and see resemblance to some round Parodia erubescens. The buds appearing as a crown on top of this cactus resembled the buds I saw on round varieties of mammalaria rhodantha.

Mammillaria don't have woolly/spiny buds, which are quite distinctive on most species of Parodia.

Yes, the wooly buds/fruits are a tipoff - and they don't actually fall off on their own.
