My 1st cactus ID request

Post by jdapper »

Hi everyone,

This is my first time being here and I was wondering if someone could help me with a couple questions:

1. Any idea of the type of cactus in the picture? I got it from Home Depot 3 years ago. It had a yellow flower glued onto it, but only had the 2 wide stalks when I got it; now it has a lot more thinner ones going different directions. I thought it could be either a browningia candelaris or cylindropuntia fulgida, but the more pictures I see of those, the less confident I feel.

2. What are the small "fingerlings" coming off the stalks? They aren't spikes, but are light green and soft.

Thanks so much!

This cactus is very light deprived. It looks like two completely different plants because of the etiolated growth.

Looks awesome in my opinion, definitely an impressive mutant. As to what it is, I have no idea, would have to see it in flower.

The fingerlings are aerial roots. Needs more water.

Most likely a Trichocereus/Lobivia hybrid. Don't water more! Cut just below the rooting offset, let it dry a few days, then insert root mass into a new pot with suitable soil.

Good luck!

Agreed. I am thinking the same.

Thanks everyone.
FYI, I do a light watering (like a couple ml) about 1 time a week.

I noticed today that in my office the blinds block most of the direct sun to the plant, so I moved it a little closer to the window.

Trichocereus aff spachianus. Sun is the answer and right remedy.
