Collection of plants seen in habitat

Post by nes »

Starting a topic about all the places I've been to where cacti/succulents are growing.
First up is my local park where mesembryanthemum crystallinum grows on one of the steep surfaces. Soil/rock here is all alluvium.
Not a native plant but was introduced to coastal California a long time ago.

Saw an extremely dehydrated, probably dead opuntia basillaris var. basillaris at Marble Mountains in the Mojave, Cadiz, CA. It was growing near a drainage, this location probably used to get enough water to support more cacti. Unfortunately this was the only one.

Agreed. It took me a while to differentiate them from each other in the field. I’ve seen them growing side by side in Nevada and California (and I believe Utah)

My bad, y'all are right. There was a few Echinocactus/Homalocephala polycephala clumps growing out there. Don't know why I labelled it as a cylindraceous. Probably because I've seen a few cylindraceous seedlings in habitat as well and they do look exactly alike.

I would upload some photos of the larger clumps but I'm having trouble getting the file size down, will find a way later.
Also going to post some cylindraceous seedlings seen at Joshua tree to show how similar they are.

Thanks for pointing it out

Side note, I'm just now realizing that the title of the topic is a little misleading. This topic is not for posting about poached plants.

Pretty interesting to see, almost all Polycephala were massive in size except for the one tiny seedling. I don't really have an indicator for growth rate as I've never seen this plant being grown in horticulture. Though I do recall there being an impressive amount of new growth on the larger clumps.

I just had a second seedling germinate of subs. xeranthemoides I got from Mesa Garden so I'll get to see first hand how slow these guys are (if I can keep them alive that is...)

Looking forward to seeing how that goes. Kudos for growing some of the less desired and less common cacti.

Collection of plants seen in habitat: that is the best collection. Takes care about itself. Just needs protection from other humans.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Some dudleyas that I believe I've already posted in another topic, but because I'm going to revisit this population, felt I should put the pictures here.
Can't remember when I took these, and i'm too lazy to put the right date on the metadata.
