Mammilaria mystax ?
Mammilaria mystax ?
Is this M.mystax or could it be something else? Going trough a lot of pics and descriptions on various sites , I am less ‘sure’now, than when I started.. So far it has two flowerbuds, the biggest buds I have seen on a Mammilaria ( with my limited experience)

Re: Mammilaria mystax ?
Reminds a lot. IMHO
Check centricirrha and compressa also.

Re: Mammilaria mystax ?
Mammillaria mystax is one of those Mammillarias with very variable spination. From short to long and curly in different plants.

Probably the most extreme long spined and attractive form.

Re: Mammilaria mystax ?
Thank you Anttisepp! From the pics I found of the two others, I think mystax seems to be a better bet.
Thank you DaveW ! Certainly a variable species, if they all are the same species? The long spined form is really attractive.DaveW wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 11:32 am Mammillaria mystax is one of those Mammillarias with very variable spination. From short to long and curly in different plants.

From what I have read , the mystax forms/group are among the white sapped Mammilarias. I am not going to test that on my own plant voluntarily but that leads to this Mamm. Found it in a shop last year. When moving it, it bumped into something and I discovered it has white sap. Apart from that, the spines seems to tolerate almost no contact with anything , before they fall off. ( see pic)
Apart from the elongated growth form ( my plant) it looks a bit like the mystax that are pictured here on cactiguide, I think.

Re: Mammilaria mystax ?
This can be Mammillaria magnimamma as well.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Re: Mammilaria mystax ?
Thank you Anttisepp I did try searching for sap, latex and white sap but I only came up with one hit, which wasn’t very helpful ( the post itself)
Re: Mammilaria mystax ?
It (2nd pic) loooks like M. woodsii (bravoe, mendeliana) - all subsp. of hahniana.Mrs.Green wrote: ↑Sun May 29, 2022 1:59 pm <…> on my own plant voluntarily but that leads to this Mamm. PS 1st pic also reminds Mammillaria priessnitzii a bit, refers often as subsp M magnimamma/centricirrha.
Re: Mammilaria mystax ?
No, about the 1st one. It is very variable too.

Re: Mammilaria mystax ?
Thank you Anttisepp and 7george I have spent some time on mammilarianet and came to the conclusion that Mammilaria growers who wants to know/ learning their plants ID must be self-tormenters..
Going trough some pages on the ID section, well it seems to me that a lot of the plants could either be ; this, that or something completely diifferent.. And these ID’s or lack of it, came from long-time growers it seemed. Kudos to those of you who have cracked the code!
