Boriana Mine Road, Yucca Arizona

Post by leland »

On Interstate 40 between Needles CA and Kingman AZ is the little town of Yucca. From Yucca going east is a well marked dirt road. For a cactus aficionado it is an interesting place. Near town is a Joshua tree forest with some typical Mohave desert cholla. As you go up you get into a transition area with saguaro cactus. This is right before the entrance to the cattle ranch and should be reachable with any passenger car. From the ranch up to the abandoned tungsten mine there are more saguaros and a high clearance vehicle would be better. At the mine are opuntias and hedgehogs. Above the mine you are in chaparral and pine and a 4wd is highly recommended.

Between town and the Boriana mine the road was graded a year ago and of this writing (May, 2021) is still in good shape for the first 18 miles. The road is rated 4wd with warning to not travel when there is rain, snow, or ice so use back road caution. We had no cell signal at the mine. Good news-- a new truck stop with restaurant and mini mart has just opened in Yucca so you are not far from some conveniences.

It's still there! I was up to Oatman, AZ, a few weeks ago. That stretch on 66 from Needles to Kingman is still mostly open desert and promoted as a scenic drive.
