Help with my sick agave victoria-reginae

Post by splitchestnut »

Hi everyone, I've had this agave victoria-reginae for a couple of years, I got it as a bit of a rehab plant and it's basically looked like this since I got it. It hasn't really grown or done much of anything at all, and I'm not sure why it's tips are brown and soft. The pup on the side appears healthier but also hasn't grown much if at all. Is there any hope for this plant? How can I help it thrive? Thank you!

This plant grows slow anyway or maybe it needs higher temps. Maybe larger and deeper pot. Old leaves of my plants also dry out and darken the same way. Try fertilizers, this can help to keep leaves green.

I had one much bigger than this one but gave it away because pots and placement became problematic for me.

I would go with the bigger pot, too.

Agaves love big pots, enough water and fertilizers. This one is overdried and sits probably in very small pot with very mineral substrate. Agaves outdoors have huge roots, they need much space. Plant it lower and plant the offspring away, single plant looks much better.

Agreed - pot the pup separately, you'll be able to grow a new plant that doesn't have the issues. Meanwhile, the old plant can be greatly improved by giving it an adequate size pot. The pot it's in now would do for the pup.

Thanks so much everyone! I'm glad to see there's a consensus on what to do, so I will pot the pup by itself in this pot then move the mother plant to a larger pot on its own, and then be more consistent with water and fertilizer. All doable! Hopefully this plant will soon be the beautiful agave I know it can be!

PS your Queen Victoria is nice and healthy. 👍
Agaves are easily bonsaiing when space and food is not enough staying small for years,
but they are very thankful for good care turning into real treasures within a months.
