Cylindropuntia imbricata or Cane Cholla. This plant is at least 20 yrs old. In Los Angeles, it was kept under 3 orange tress and did not get much care. Sine moving out to the desert 18 months ago it has gone from a thin leggy plant to giving me a flower.

Its hot.. Excessive hot. At 7am it is already 89°f . I decided to remove 3 of the roof panels to help with the venting of the hot air.

I have to assemble the Solar Screens still today, but I think the 60% shade cloth will be sufficient temporarily.

On the other hand, many of the plants love the heat.

I like the funky looking esmeraldana, almost looks like it's a grafted plant.

With all this heat and intense sun, I had to come up with a solution. Adding two 9ft diameter umbrellas have helped shade everything between 10am

to 4pm. A few of the other casualties before the umbrellas were opened.

Hi Mike,

what a pity about the plants!
This reminds me again of the sentences of my friends in Tucson Az. -
" K.W. if you want to collect cacti here you don't need a greenhouse, you need shading!!!! "

Good luck,

K.W.

I am sorry, but it clearly said july on the forum 😔

On to a differen topic; May I ask why do you keep cacti in a greenhouse in your area? It doesn’t seem to be a problem with to low temperatures, rather the opposit.. 🥵 Wouldn’t it have been easier to keep the cacti on shelves with only a roof and shadeclots ? I am not questioning your growing skills at all, I am just curious 🙂

Exuberance. I never had a space large enough to accommodate a greenhouse. So When I moved out here to Indio I had space and built the greenhouse. Yes its hot, yes I probably could have gotten away with building a Roof and Shade Cloth like many growers do. I was going to remove half the side panels at the beginning of the summer months but changed my mind. I ended up removing 3 roof panels on the north side. At the current peak of the season and sun exposure a few of the plants on the top shelf of the north side have shown sun stress with the 60% shade cloth still covering them.. Those under the 10mm UV panels have not. The Greenhouse has morphed into a protective zone from the winds we get and from the UV exposure. All the plants seem to have no issue with the 105°f plus temperatures, it the sun stress that they need help with. I'm also going to try and use the heat to may advantage in Sept. I'm going to try germinating seeds on the lower shelves. Protected from sun but 80°f temperatures.
Plus, the cool factor. Show someone a picture of the greenhouse and collection and they are in awe usually.

I was scrolling through pictures and comparing growth over time. This creeping devil really grew in a year.

Thank you, I do see what you mean when I looked up ‘exuberance’, which I can’t remember to have come across before 🙂 If the plants can tolerate the high temperatures, then there shouldn’t be a problem. I was thinking that keeping the plants in a greenhouse in an area with such high temperatures seemed to be counterproductive.

Interesting plant, I've only ever seen this plant grounded and rooted almost like a horizontal log cutting. Considering it's not natural for it to be growing vertical, it's interesting seeing how it grows when forced to stay upright.
