Hana's grafting 2020~2021

Post by Hanazono »

It will be not so many but I will graft some seedlings in this season.
I set 6 Pereskiopsis young off-shoots cuttings in tubes yesterday.
They will be used as stocks 4 days later.

I grafted 6 scions in this morning as planned.

Scion: Photo 1
Ariocarpus 1st filial hybrid, retusus v furfuraceus cv Seguri cauliflower x fissuratus cv godzilla
I know this hybrid exists but I want to see by myself.
I will graft 24 scions in total.

Stock: Photo 2
15 cm Pereskiopsis off-shoot cutting
Since it is 4 days after setting, the stock has no roots.

Tools: Photo 3
2 craft knives are used.
One is for cutting stock and the other is for cutting scion.
Tweezers are used to hold stock top during grafting.
The knife is wiped after each cutting by tissue paper dumped by methylated spirits.

The grafting process will be completed after 10 days.
Setting to completion is 14 days in total which is my standard of seedling grafting process.

G'morning Pseudolithoslover,
Wow! Beautiful ario seedlings!
Seeds were sown on 20th July in 4 pots. The photo is one of them.
Since it took around 2 weeks to complete the germination, seedlings are around 2 months old.
I will graft just 24 seedlings. Rest seedlings will be kept as own-root cacti.

The grafting process of 6 scions, Ariocarpus hybrid cauliflower x godzilla was completed in this morning. I repotted them into 9 cm square pots.
Since the temperature in this spring is bit lower than that of normal year, I could not see any roots development on all stocks.
All scions are taken well. The photo is one of them.

The grafting process of 4 Ariocarpus hybrids was completed in this morning and they were repotted.
10 scions were grafted in total without any failures.

The hybrid is:
Mother: A. retusus v furfuraceus cv Suguri cauliflower
Father: A. fissuratus cv godzilla

I think I can see the appearence of this hybrid within a year.

Great to see a new thread from you.

Are you having any issues with the cooler than normal weather?
My pereskiopsis is very slow to start growing this year.

G'morning walker,
Are you having any issues with the cooler than normal weather?
My pereskiopsis is very slow to start growing this year.
Yes I am having problem.
The growing of off-shoots which are used for grafting stocks are very slow.
The development of roots on stock is also very slow.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for getting back to me.

I have delayed grafting to pereskiopsis this year due to weather, was hoping to have started already.
Hopefully we get good warm weather soon.

Best of luck with your grafts and I am looking forward to seeing future updates.
