Bulbine mesembryanthemoides from seed

Post by Aloinopsis »

I was given some Bulbine mesembryanthemoides seeds in January. I planted them in February, and they are now about 2 centimeters tall.

I had to take them out of the bag because I accidentally knocked it over and soil was covering the plants.

I gently sprayed them and put top dressing back. It has now been 7 days and they do not look too bad.

I don't know much about these plants, and I did not even realise I perhaps planted them at the wrong time of year.

They are under grow lights with Haworthia abd Gasteria seedlings. Do they look etiolated to you or just broken/battered from when I knocked them over?

Do you have any other advice for what I should do in the coming months, or what I should expect? As I said, I have never grown these before and did not think I would be successful in getting them to sprout.

Bulbine mesembryanthemoides are one of the best of the Bulbines

Keep your seedlings growing as long as you can
try to keep them from going dormant until late spring
they may even send out flower stalks the first year

I grew the batch on the left from seed sowed a year ago
They cluster on the right is several years old

Thank you. Does that mean cooler temperatures and keep watering through late spring to prevent summer dormancy or to then allow summer dormancy?

To be honest I didn't know what I was doing and didn't expect these to do well but I like them now that I've managed to keep them alive thus far!

Keep them in a cool area, and water them until they go dormant naturally
some winter growers will stay in growth all summer long and just go into full growth in Fall

They will go dormant quickly if you under water

Growing seedlings through the dormant period advice is the million dollar question

The best advice is to keep them alive by keeping them stress free as possible

Thank you. Some of my Dioscorea are starting to go dormant, so these are probably not far behind.

Hello friends I have recently bought this bulbine and I am wondering if it is dormancy or not? I live in the south of Spain and I think it should be inactive, please give me some cultivation advice and I would like to know what is the best soil mix thank you very much. ....

They go dormant late Spring early summer, or after flowering
so keep it dry and shading until fall
They need a typical cactus soil, fast drying
Your soil looks like pure potting mix, I would add Pumice and sand
