Thank you, pottedmob. They obviously love their summer outside on the balcony. Unfortunately, they have never flowered up to now. I don't know if I am doing something wrong and if so what.
Somebody wrote in a German cactus forum that there are "bad clones" around who never flower.... Maybe I got one of those?! That guy killed all his Tephros and bought new, flowering clones. No idea, I couldn't do that. I like mine, although I miss the flowers.

I love how tephros are ball shaped.

They may not have been large enough to bloom. It's often remarked how difficult it is to get them to blooming size, as the segments get knocked off easily.

Not all are - T. weberi is cylindrical, as is T articulatus var diadematus.

But what is the right size for blooming? I have read about 8 segments or balls should be enough. That is what at least the older plant has for years (and more).

Looks like 5 - 6 segments big. Or maybe needs to branch first?

Ok, I am ready to wait until next summer, if really necessary.

My plants have more than seven segments and they have branched. So no excuses, if that are the conditions.
But what keeps them from doing it...?

7george, do you know which kind of soil your friend uses?
Does he place the plant outside during summer -- little / much sun? A lot / small amount of / nearly no watering? What about fertiliser?
Where is the plant during winter -- glass house, cool, heated? Little / much light? A bit / no watering?
Mine are on the balcony during summer in full sun. They get the rain. If necessary, I water them -- a lot on each occation, but with quite some time for the soil to dry in between. Some fertiliser in spring. During winter: unheated stairwell, not too much light, next to no water.
