Larger flowered Mammillaria's

Post by DaveW »

We seem to have missed a month with nobody coming up with a subject. How about Larger Flowered Mammillaria's then? Those with flowers larger than average for the genus? Some often have flowers even larger than the body. Or the Baja California species usually have flowers larger than most Mammillarias.

Mammillaria theresae on the left and Mammillaria bertholdii on the right.

M. boolii. If the stem is still small flowers look even bigger. 8)

Another beauty is M. senilis, under its red "umbrellas".

Agreed and it's relative Mammillaria dodsonii Keith, which differs mainly in it's obvious darker central spines. The nurserymen in the UK don't seem to be propagating them much now, which is a pity as they are attractive flowering plants.

Hi Dave, is Mammillaria bertholdii hard to grow ? I'm starting to see grafted plants here and there. Usually I don't go after new expensive plants but try and find old ones I used to have that and that are no longer around except in my photo album, before digital :D . Mammillaria bertholdii looks so cool I think Its worth acquiring.

That clump of mammaillaria dehertiana bit the dust while I lived in Phoenix AZ , probably should have kept it drier in the Summer which is extremely hot in Phoenix. I never see them for sale anymore but I have one seedling left that's doing better now that I transplanted it out of my AZ death mix soil designed to hold water. It likes my mostly pumice mix now, and cooler nights.

Would like to find a clumping one for sale say in a 4" pot like the old days. Its always nice to have a backup plant.

Mine are on a graft Keith, so I don't know what they are like on their own roots. However from being new grafts from a friend at the start on the year they are already starting to offset so I may try and root one down later. I gather it is one of those plants you can tubercle graft by just taking off a single tubercle and leaving the rest of the plant unharmed. The rate the thing grows it will soon be fairly common, at least on a graft.

They were going for around £10 (= $12.80, = €11.14) in the UK when I bought mine, since of course you are paying for two plants, the stock and the scion. However the chap I got them from is a good grafter but I have seen some pathetic ones for 50% more than that. Make sure it is growing well since you don't want a dry graft.

I understand the M. deherdtiana/dodsonii's are a bit tricky on their own roots. I have just obtained one and am seeing how long it takes for me to kill it!

I would imagine grafted tubercles would do as well on Pereskiopsis or other stocks as well as Opuntia's, as long as you set them off centre on larger stocks so the vascular bundles are crossed.

I understand the M. deherdtiana/dodsonii's are a bit tricky on their own roots." They also like to brown up at the bottom of the stem and grow tall.

So I cut the top off when they get too tall and ugly and hope for a clump. And re root the top, the inside of the stem is on the red side. Not super easy to grow but not impossible like some cactus.

I am not sure, if this plant's flowers can be considered large for the genus Mammillaria. However, they would at least fall into the category "medium".
This plant can be found growing scattered among other cacti and succulents near where I reside, i.e. El Paso, Texas.
The plant's name is Mammillaria grahamii.
