Hana's seedlings 2018/2019

Post by Hanazono »

I did not plan to sow cactus seeds in this year but a my friend gave me some seeds.
These seeds were sown in this morning.

Seeds: small quantity of each species
Astrophytum asterias cv Oibo ruri kabuto
Astrophytum hybrid fukuryu banjyaku
Ariocarpus fissuratus cv godzilla
Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus cv cauliflower (A)
Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus cv cauliflower (B)

Light: natural, through 50% shade cloth
Temperature: A temperature adjustable heating pad is used, the target temperature on top soil is 30 'C.

Soil mix:
Organic material-1
1 mm clay grain-1
Zeolite 0.5~1.0 mm-1
Coarse sand-1

Top dressing: 2~4 mm zeolite

Soil sterilisation: nil
A fungicide is used.

I am not sure the possible germination rate but I will keep them for two weeks.

The germination rate of Ariocarpus has been poor.
I will keep pots on the heating pad for one more week.

All pots were removed from a heating pad and moved into a plastic wet-box in the afternoon.
All Ariocarpus seedlings will be grafted but Astrophytum seedlings will be not.

G'morning AGR,

I can see 12 seedlings of godzilla.
I am waiting the forming of Pereskiopsis' off-shoots.

The grafting will be in October.

Good morning Frank,
Your Godzilla seedlings will be 8-10 weeks old? Is that your standard time frame for grafting on Pereskiopsis?

G'morning Alejandro,

Yes 8-10 weeks old Ariocarpus is my standard seedling grafting age on Pereskiopsis.
Scions of these age have small body and shrinkage is miner during grafting process and so you do not need any pressure on scions.
I just keep moisture around scions.

I need 15 cm length off-shoots of Pereskiopsis as the grafting stock.
I expect to get them in October.

Good morning Frank,
If I may ask you another question; on another of your posts you mention putting the seedlings on containers with a capillary mat (felt?) can you elaborate on this method? What kind of material do you use, how much water?

G'day Alejandro,

The capillary mat which I use is sold as a product, 5 mm thickness and material is felt.
A wool blanket is possible to use as the same purpose.

Since the lid of plastic box has small holes and the capillary mat drys gradually.
I water over the capillary mat when it was dried.
The frequency of watering depends upon season but it is around every 2 months.

I water until the mat wets completely. You can recognise this condition by the colour of mat.

G'day oriky,

It seems the setting is alight.
We can not tell about the result in 1 week. We have to wait 2 weeks at least.

Hi frank, Thank you for the answer - today, 15 days after the sowing only 4-5 more seeds germinate:
13 seeds was germinate
Usually, after 14 days with my experience with Astro, all of them was already germinate

I could harvest seeds of Strombocactus disciformis form my own cacti lately.
I sowed seeds on 1st in this month.
Their germination is not immediate but it has been increased numbers slowly.
I took a photo in this morning, 12 days after sowing.

2nd sowing was done yesterday afternoon.
