Hana's grafting in 2018/2019

Post by Hanazono »

Winter has been in here and spring will be soon.
I have started to prepare for spring jobs.

My friend gave me seeds of an Ariocarpus fissuratus cultivar.
Although I did not plan to graft in this coming spring, I decided to graft these seedlings.
Seeds will be sown in July and seedlings will be grafted in September.

1st job is the preparation of stocks. I use Pereskiopsis.

Cut back, fed manure and wait new off-shoots coming up
Rooted off-shoots are used for grafting stocks.

OK,
So I will now copy the above...
Will you be watering pereskiopsis over the next few months?
I stopped to reduce humidity in greenhouse.

Winter in here is relatively mild.
For the cacti, June is late autumn and August is early spring.
I water twice in each these months and nil in July.

G'morning oriky,

I use 15 cm length of off-shoots for grafting stocks.
Since there is a mark of 15 cm on the cutting board, the length is quite accurate.
The grafting process is carried out in a plastic box with lid and so the stock length has a limitation.

I use chicken pellet manure.
It is possible to buy the chicken pellet manure in the market, which is too strong for cacti and can not use directly.
I keep it in a plastic box for 2 years and water from time to time and waiting the fermentation.

1st grafting in this season was completed in this morning.

Since the species of scion is very new for me and Just 11 seedlings are germinated, 1 seedling was used as the trial.
Scion: Ariocarpus fissuratus cv godgilla, around 3 months old

27th September: Set a 15 cm of Pereskiopsis off-shoot for rooting
3rd October: Grafted the scion
13th October: Completed the grafting process and repotted.

Stock is rooted normally in 17 days but I could not see any roots on the trail stock.
I think the temperature is not high enough because it is the beginning of the season.

3 more scions were grafted in this morning and 5 off-shoots were also set for the rooting.

The attached photo is the scion completed the grafting.

5 scions, Ariocarpus fissuratas cv Godzilla were completed the grafting process and repotted in 9 cm square pots.
This is the 1st time but I found a rotting on lower part of a stock. I cut 3 cm back the stock.
9 scions of Godzilla were grafted so far without any failure.

4 scions, Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus cv Suguri cauliflower were grafted.

5 off-shoots were set for the rooting which may be use the last grafting in this season.

I also had some pereskiopsis rot.
Has never happened before. Thought it was quite unusual.
I'm waiting a few more weeks to graft because Melbourne is not as warm as S.A I don't think.

G'mornig Walker87,

I use new shoot cuttings of Pereskiopsis as grafting stocks.
New shoots grow vigorously in October in here.
When new shoots reached more than 15 cm, I cut them and use for stocks.

I sow cactus seeds to meet this schedule, e.g. Ariocarpus seeds are sown in July.
