Getting shot is less painful than being full of glochids

I would at least put some goggles on, in case the enemy shoots back. I can just imagine, getting hit by some exploding cactus pads and sprayed with glochids. I did some weed whacking this spring and accidentally hit a few Opuntia cladodes. What a mess that was! :)
Also, prickly pear cacti do not offer much protection and are definitely not bullet proof.

Some were issued, but they were not popular. The British shipped thousands of them back to the States in exchange for box magazines, complaining of the weight of the drums, that they rattled, and that changing magazines was slow. Later versions dropped provision for the drum magazines.

Yes the notorious bolt lock assist thingy that if lost, you'll spend a few minutes battling the drum to mount. I did not know about the issues you mentionned so thanks! There was also problems with the spring sometimes not having enough tension for all 51 rounds and misloading problems.

Well, when I was in the army we had to dig trenches for cannons in the ground manually and that wasn't easy, believe me. I would take the glochids.
