Are Stenocactus self fertile?

Post by AlanW »

Excuse my ignorance but are Stenocactus self fertile or do they need a polinater?.

For most of the desert cactus genus you can assume are not self fertile.

Off the top of my head I can only think of Setiechinopsis and Frailea that are self fertile. There are probably a few more but the list probably exhausts rapidly.

A few species such as Neoporteria (Eriosyce) can adapt to become self fertile if sufficient time has past after failing cross pollination as a last resort to pass down its gene, but you'll get a sad amount of seeds that way (under 10 seeds even) as opposed to hundreds.
I suck at identification :dontknow:

Check out Aymeric de Barmon's seed list for notes on self-sterile/fertile. http://adblps-graines-cactus.com/Graine ... -03-04.pdf

I've got another one - http://lapsyserre.free.fr/psy_liste/SPSY2K4.doc

Also in French - why are they the only ones who provide this info?

Thanks greenknight. No I'm surprised the Americans haven't produced one as I regard them as being the foremost experts in cacti.
