Hana's cacti
Re: Hana's cacti
The cactus on attached photo is a Gymnocalycium spegazzinii v horizonthalonium.
I bought 100 seeds and sowed in 2003. Unfortunately just a few of them survive currently.
I found this cactus stopped to develop new spines 2 years ago and I repotted it.
Old potting-mix was sand base and I could not see any roots. I used permeable materials for the repotting.
Gymnocalycium species develop new spines in winter in here.
As you can see the cactus has started to develop new spines. I am quite sure this one could survive.

Re: Hana's cacti
Today is the 1st day of winter in here.
Since the temperature in this year was low enough, I stopped watering in mid of May.
Last winter was relatively warm and I continued to water by mid of June. As the result, I lost many asterias in spring by rotting.
The photo is miracle kabutos sown seeds in 2013. I lost many of these sibling.
They are 8~9 cm in diameter which are all flowering size.
I hope they can survive in this year.

That's why they rotted then ? Tricky plants when they get big. I will be extra careful with my survivors I had two small Asterias turn red in Winter and they don't look so good even now. The rest are doing OK.
The hybrids are probably much harder to keep alive.

G'morning keith,
Thanks for your comment.
Winter is June to August here in Australia. Since winter in my place is modelate, similar to USA 10b, I propagate cacti long time as June is late autumn and August is early spring but I made a failure last year. I will see the result this year.
Miracle kabuto is hard to say as a hybrid.
The original one came from USA havitat. A Japanese importer found one in the imported asterias. He was sure it came from USA but he could not know the exact havitat. Unfortunately it was just one and crossed various forms of asterias to keep the gene, mainly Texas kabuto which was an asterias form came from Texas.
Current miracle kabuto is created by crossing different asterias forms.
Frank

Re: Hana's cacti
I record all cacti propagated from seeds, name and seeds sowing date. Unfortunately I misseds names of some cacti which I bought young plants.
The photo is one of them. Please let me know if someone kew the name.
I bought a small cactus in 2003, which was kept 5 years in the greenhose but it was moved out to outdoor.

Good morning Frank!
It looks like Cleistocactus tupizensis. Maybe I am wrong!

Can't say the exact species, but I agree with the Cleistocactus ID.

G'day Bryan & Evan,
Thank you very much for your information.

Re: Hana's cacti
Winter has been in here. Although some cacti have pushed flowering buds up, they may not be able to open flowers.
The photo is one of them, Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus.

Hi Frank!
From you photos of the Cleistocactus, I can see that you have quite a lot of Harrisia jusbertii. They are very tough plant, and don't grow too big. Did you ever used then as rootstock for grafting? I heard some people said they are very good rootstock.

G'morning Bryan & Evan,
I used 3 years old H. jusbertii seedlings as grafting stocks years ago.
I stopped to use these seedlings when Pereskiopis was available in here. I just have used Pereskiopsis only.
