God morning Hanazono I really admire the A. cv. khoyo kikkos ( not entirely sure this is the right name I use here?) The texture and colours on these plants are truly fascinating. In this thread ; https://www.cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47119 you posted a pic of another beautiful plant. If and when you have the time, would it be possible for you to post more photos of these cacti? In different stages and ages?

I bought original seeds in 2004. Khoyo is available in Europe.

1. Seedlings just after germination.
2. 3 years old seedlings
3. Young plant before flowering age, this age shows a good colour
4. Matured flowering size plant, does not turn body colour but khoyo gene is remained. All seeds harvested from this one are khoyo.
5. All khoyo is nudum form normally but it is possible to transfer to other forms. The photo is my 1st filial cultivar Onzuka x khoyo, strawberry-milk.

A turbinicarpus jauernigii was in flower yesterday.
I bought seeds and sowed in 2006. 4 seedlings have been survived. They are now flowering size.

Late flowering of Ariocarpus species

An ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus f Rio Verde was in flower in this afternoon.
Since winter has been, only limited species are in flower.

Just 4 cacti were in flower yesterday afternoon.

I could not see any new cacti flowers in this morning.
I took two phots of Astrophytum hy brids called "banjyaku". Banjyaku is a hybrid of ornatum x myriostigma.
They show a strong ornatum gene which have spines.

It seems the gene of khoyo is also mixed slightly.

Asterias cultivar shows the character of cultivar when they reached an old age.
My old two super kabutos have started to show the character well. I bought seeds and sowed in 2004.
I do not graft asterias. Asterias show an exaggerated flecking normally when they were grafted.
You can not see true appearence of super kabutos if you grafted them.

The original ribs were 7 and it has turned to multi-ribs plant.

Rib bottoms are lifted and higher than rib tops. Rib top is the lines of areoles.

Flecking of both super kabutos have been developed well.

Thank you very much Hanazono Just to be sure, these are the same as this one, ( I am not referring to the shape of the plant but the colour here.)? It is the pale green colour with just a hint of red, that I find so attractive. The ones pictured in your answer to me, are darker green and the red colour much more dominant. The pale green colour with just a hint of red( almost like it’s blushing) is it just a variaton of the khoyo?

The original source of my khoyo is just one but I bought 40 seeds and sowed in 2004. Since I bought seeds, I am not sure any mixing of seeds.

The body colour of khoyo comes from following 3 factors.
1. Age of cactus
2. Seasons
3. Individual character

1. Only young plants can turn the body colour.
Old plannts turn the body colour partially or do not turn the body colour at all.

2. Khoyo start to turn the body colour in autumn and continue to spring. It will return to green completely in summer.

3. There are various khoyo colours such as yellow, orange, red and chocolate.
Normal body colour is also various, pale green to dark green.

A young myriostigma cv khoyo
The season is autumn, just starting to turn the body colour
Khoyo is red.
The original body colour is pale green.

Khoyo character also exists on Ariocarpus, Gymnocalycium and Mammillaria.

A thelocactus called "beni-taka" was very popular in Japan about 20 years ago. Beni-taka means red hawk.
Actually it was a thelocactus heterochromus with thick and long spines.

I found seeds of possible alternative species in a local seed supplier and sowed in 2006.
The name tag of seeds said "Thelocactus heterochromus f longispinus".
6 of seedlings have survived.

I attached 2 photos. They are around 13 cm in diameter. Heterochromus opens large flowers in summer.

I have never sown seeds of Astrophytum asterias cv kikko kabuto but I have kept two of the cultivars.

Photo 1: My friend gave me one which was a grafted nudum form.
It seems the scion can not gain any more size. It is a small cactus, 9 cm in diameter.

Photo 2: I sowed super kabuto seeds harvested from one of my cacti.
It started turning to kikko form two years ago.
It is a large asterias, 17 cm in diameter.
