Miracle kabuto starts to show the mutation of flecking around 5 years old.
The miracle kabuto on photo is just starting to show the mutation. Thick flecking has come out around the growing point.

Mirakuru is a Japanese word and it is "miracle" in English.

You can not see the character of miracle kabuto under 2 years old seedlings.
Although you can not see the formation of thick flecking, the evidence of miracle kabuto will appear around 3 years old.
I select seedings and only keep ones showing the evidence when they were 3 years old.

The original miracle kabuto was star-shaped but there is round miracle kabuto also.

Variegated asterias grow slowly.
The photo is seedlings of variegated asterias sown seeds on 17th July 2014.
Both parents were variegated plants. Around 80% of seedlings were variegated.
I have still kept 75 seedlings.

I sowed seeds of miracle kabuto every year for a while.
The photo is seedlings sown seeds in 2015. Seedlings sown in that year do not grow well by unknown reasons.
I still can not judge yet which ones are true miracle or not.

Very beautiful. I have around 100 regular super kabuto seedlings. They are just over a month old. I can't wait until I start to show different characters and this thread has been very helpful.

G'morning Aloinopsis,

There is no guarantee all seedlings becoming super kabutos even if both parents were super kabutos.
Just one super kabuto was found originally and crossed with various forms of kabutos.
Seedlings will show various faces.

Super kabuto shows the evidence in early age, 1 year old and you can select at that age.
The photo is a typical 1 year old super kabuto.

They are so cute. They remind me of a nest of little birds.

I have a question as well--when you transplant Astrophytum seedlings, do they go into wet soil or dry?

I had a tray of seedlings that the cat knocked over. I replanted them into dry mix and they are looking sunken. Just curious.

I use wet soil.
I cut roots off when repotting asterias seedlings and so I just insert seedlings into wet soil.

I prepare for repotting in winter.
The 1st job is the selection which should be repotted in spring.
24 miracle kabutos have been selected. They will be trimmed roots and repotted in August.
They are in 65 mm square pots currently but they will moved into 85 mm square pots.
Photos are selected miracle kabutos.

Beautiful. This one is my favorite.

How much do you trim the roots at this size?

Miracle kabuto which you marked has just started to show the character of "Miracle" and will turn the appearance soon.

They were cut tap roots once when they were 2 years old and so they have fine roots only.
I trim roots in every occasions of repotting and check root rotting.
Trimming of roots also allows to make space for new growing roots in the new pots.

I do not have photos of same age but attached photos are similar age.
*Removed miracle kabutos from old pots with long fine roots
* After trimmed roots around 3 cm length

No I do not sterilise soil mix.
I use a fungicide, 250 g/kg Furalaxyl.

Spray fungicide over top of soil mix before sowing seeds
Spray over after sowing seeds
Cover seeds over by top dressing, 2~4 mm zeolite and spray fungicide again.
3 times of sprays in total

I do not use the baggie method but seedlings are kept in high humidity plastic box at least for 1 year.
The fungicide and coarse topdressing can minimise the formation of mould.

Hi!
This is from last year but i wonder if anyone here is from EuropeanUnium because i cant buy Furalaxyl (not sold here), is there any good substitute?

Thanks in advance!
