Very nice plants! Like the pot with the small Opuntia growing alongside moss and Sedum(?) How cold does it get in winter at your place and how much snow do you normally get?

Thanks!

I'm in zone 3 with some days or a week with lows of -30 to -33s, long winter and many snows and tows but no rains until late April. The local O. polyacantha and O. fragilis (on that photo) are very well adapted to these conditions. Can be grown in pots because ground here freezes ~0.5 m deep anyway in winter.
The only
O. fragilis that bloomed this summer. SW facing garden bed. Hard grown?

That was a bit colder than I expected. But I would guess the plants would have a nice and thick duvey of snow on then? Such low temperatures if it were black frost would have killed them?

No, if you ask about native species. Snow here often melts to the ground during winters. But cacti get dehydrated (contracted) since September till next May that saves them from freezing (see images on page 12). Thick snow is bad: it keeps moisture below it for long time and this promotes fungi at even milder conditions.
Non-native hardy species have different strategies and can suffer or die from late back colds in April or May if they get active and decide to intake water so early in the season... Pest and diseases are other topic though...
A strange (defective) flower sometimes...
Night blooms have been often missed for may camera...
This one is regular if not neglected. Larryleachia cactiformis.

Thank you
Thats interesting. Black frost can kill plants here, especially if it has rained a lot first and then black frost sets in. In spring it’s no advantage here with to little snow cover, since the spring sun is pretty strong and if its windy on top of that, garden plants/ bushes( non-native) often dies if they are unprotected. They simply dries out, since the ground is frozen and they cant take up water.
Nice ‘pet’ hare..
Aren’t there any predators in the neighbourhood?

Not many predators between houses, just some skunks seen but these are not a threat for rabbits. Coyotes live in parks along the river but rabbits outnumber them for sure. The rabbit helps with the grass too so I can have more time for things like cacti and forums.

Tips are rather sharp but spines are flexible, esp. if bended up.
Copiapoa humilis.
This Gymno is starting the season quite late. It's lucky that is still hot here...

Very nice collection, beautiful plants, many thanks for sharing! Have you ever tried some kind of greenhouse? It works as a fairy remedy for cacti in our high latitudes.

Thanks, anttisepp,
My back yard is quite small and I don't want to take it with permanent GH. So I do a small plastic one for the part of plants I bring outside summer time.
Now is uncovered, just with sunscreen.
