Thanks for the encouragement Majcka. I just find it very confusing at times. Think I've IDd a plant, put on for confirmation, and find that I was totally wrong most of the time. Last two I got the genere right though, so I suppose that's something.

In every category it is more male than female. What could that mean? :-k

More men are into cacti than women? (or women don't like to put their ages on the internet, even if it's by the decade?)
or it could just be that more men are into cacti :)

Who knows? On our local cacti forum it is the same thing 3 or 4 women and triple amount of men.

In my own observations, more "mainstream" gardening seems to be dominated by women. For instance the local "Master Gardeners" clubs where I've given talks. I think our OC club was a pretty even mix. However, I don't remember any women that were strictly or even mostly cacti like some of the guys.

Well I see we males over 70 have one have one female each who are 60-69! But you youngsters look like having to share women!

Hey Dave, yes I think that Cactus and succulents are probably one of the few gardening categories where men outnumber the women. Maybe Bonsai too?

Here is the male/female ratio per age bracket from above:

Male:Female
Under 20 - 4.25:1
20-29 - 3:1
30-39 - 2.9:1
40-49 - 5.6:1
50-59 - 2.3:1
60-69 - 5.6:1
70+ - 3:0

So the closest ratio is among the 50-59 group and the average of all ages is 3.5 males per female.

Interesting ratios Daiv! I have noticed the male dominance in cactus growing, and also palm tree growing. I read through quite a discussion about the male dominance of palm growers on another forum and thought some of the ideas presented were rather interesting. In general it seems that men seem to take growing a particular group of plants rather seriously as is the case with palm and cactus growers. These are just my observations and may not be correct, but it seems like woman like the two plant groups to an extent and many "grow" them, but the men take it seriously and "collect" them. Maybe men are just more interested in joining a forum about said plants and showing them off, and women are not as interested in that. Who knows!

My guess, is that women are a different species and act differently then men ;)
