Growth Habits: Stems up to 15 inches [40cm] tall, and 2 1\4 inches dia [6cm] can form large clumps of 50 or more stems.

Scientific name; Echinocereus coccineus ssp. paucispinus

Common names: Scarlet hedgehog cactus.

Synonym: Cereus paucispinus, Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. paucispinus, Echinocereus paucispinus

Etymology: From the Greek echino = hedgehog cereus from the Latin meaning candle.
The name "paucispinus" means having few spines.

Origin: Southwestern USA (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, western Texas), Mexico (Sonora, Coahuila, Chihuahua)

Light: Full sun to light shade.

Compost. A free draining standard cactus mix.

Water: Regular water in spring to autumn.

Flower: Orangey red colour.

Min temp: It is very cold resistant from -10° [14f] to -25° C [-13f] (depending on clones)

Cultivation: Needs to be cold and dry at the roots in winter to encourage flowering.

Habitat. found growing on rocky outcroppings, often in partial-shade.

Comments: A good plant to grow outside in cold area's as long as its not too wet.
Plants sometimes have single sex flowers with some being male and others female.
